Morning Poll: Would You Throw the Book at Susan Brock?

Susan Brock
The sentencing hearing for Susan Brock, the somewhat-estranged wife of Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock, is scheduled to resume today.

Brock faces a minimum sentence of seven years, a maximum sentence of 15 years, and a presumptive sentence of 10 years for carrying out a three-year sexual relationship with a teenage family friend, starting when the boy was only 14.

Defense psychologists argue that Brock showed remorse and that she's at low risk for repeating her crimes if she remains in society. The shrink claims Brock should be "rehabilitated in the community."

However, from jail, Brock allegedly tried to have a friend destroy evidence. Not to mention, she repeatedly sexually abused a kid. If genders were reversed, we have a feeling Brock would have the book thrown at her.

Brock's sentence is expected to be handed down either this afternoon or tomorrow. We want to know what you think: would you throw the book at the county supervisor's wife?

I wouldn't throw the book at her, I'd shoot a butt-rocket up her ass, and bone her in the backside like a drunken gay college kid on his first date.

Personally I think the sentences for this sort of crime are excessive. They reflect Americans' unease with sex generally.

I am a female who works with families with young children impacted by trauma and violence. The fact that this woman conducted a long-term, deceptive, predatory, and highly manipulative "relationship" with her victim warrants a maximum sentence. Added to that the fact that she is a parent who got her own daughter involved in this sick game only makes it worse. I have to wonder what kinds of emotional, psychological, and/ or sexual manipulation and abuse Mrs. Brock perpetrated upon her own children. Put her away for as long as possible.

Roro, part of the terms of her plea bargin is a requirement that she is on permanent probation and register as a sex offender, so I think that base is covered.

I would be inclined to lean toward the minimum rather than the maximum term. As Johnny White Man said, it was 1 victim and seems to be a specific circumstance. Also, keep in mind that the kid was 14 years old, not 4. He, at the time, would have been old enough to be tried as an adult if he had committed a serious crime, so he also was old enough to know right from wrong and could have taken action to "defend himself". Apparently he was enjoying himself and his gifts too much to take any responsibility for what happened.

I'm not saying that I condone her actions. I'm just suggesting that it takes at least 2 to tango, and in this situation, it sounds like there were actually 4 dancers. (Susan, her daughter Rachel, the boy and his girl friend.)

While its true that men are generally handed down with harsher sentences, simply because they make up the majority of sex crime perpetrators than women. I still think its fair to give men harsher sentences, however in Mrs. Brock's case, I wouldn't send her more than 5 years in the pen. This is because there was only 1 victim involved, and she doesn't appear to a "risk" to society's children. Its not like she was downloading child pornography and engaging in illicit activities with child in the community. So I'll show a little mercy and give Brock 5 years.

Let's have a little equal opportunity. If the genders were reversed, the man would be branded and reviled as a predatory pedophile and after a lengthy incarceration would be subject to lifetime parole and be required to register as a sex offender. The individual's professed remorse would have no bearing on it. Most remorse in these cases is because they got caught.

I think your comment would make most people uneasy and not just in America I can tell you.

I believe I read today that Rachel, the daughter, had sex with the victim before he mom did. So who got who involved? This book isn't closed yet. There is yet another chapter or two to be written...

Liz, I doubt that she is going to re-offend, honestly. It appears Fulton and she have decided to rededicate themselves to their religious beliefs and that should take care of that. At least in theory. In reality, by the time she gets our of prison she may not even want to be with a guy again...

the boy didn't know any better, think if this was your boy, what would you want for this remorseful lady?

Johnny White Man says:"Its not like she was downloading child pornography and engaging in illicit activities"

Reminds me of Joel Fox. Wonder how long he's going to prison for?

She was engaging illicit activities with a child in the community because the male victim in this case happens to be some other parents' teenage son. As for the "risk" to society's children. Unless you are an expert in the treatment and rehabilitation of sexual offenders you are no position to offer an opinion on the risk the she may pose to other teenage boys in the community. Finally, what do you actually know about female sexual offenders Johnny White Man other than your own uneducated & biased opinions based solely on gender?

You're just trying to excuse a lighter sentence for a FEMALE abuser. People should do the same time for the same crimes regardless of gender, race, etc... She should have the same prison time that a man would have, which is a lot more than 15 years.

E.J. Montini said years ago: "If a fourteen year old girl has sex with an adult, she got raped. If a fourteen year old boy has sex with an adult, he got lucky."

I'll go even further: I think Americans' approach to criminal justice as a whole is too punitive, and reflective of our dishonorable Puritan heritage.

The next chapter is where that arpaio suck-up Fulton comes in. And what his role was. I believe that arpaio ass-kisser knew what was going on for quite sometime. He may be just saving his own ass, politically and professionally. The chapter will be closed when he resigns from public office.

Actually, this is a public blog. If Johnny WM wishes to express his opinion here he is very free to do so, as you are welcome to say he doesn't have the right to do so. A recent article documented that at least one psychiatrist is saying she is NOT considered a risk of re-offending... and it may be that JWM bases his opinion on that article...

Agreed and very well said.

Don't worry, Susan. Arpaio's boys aren't too good at keeping track of child molesters.

I think you will find there are very few psychiatrist's (professionals) who can assess the recidivism risk of a female sex offender to any degree of accuracy due to a lack of research and acknowledgment of female sexual offending in the professional field. The fact that one psychiatrist is saying she is NOT considered a risk of re-offending is probably more down to an "educated guess" based upon the fact that Susan Brock's chances of re-offending.will be restricted because she is required to register as a sex offender for life.
