Medical Marijuana Users Become Legal: Nearly 600 People Approved, Mostly for Chronic Pain

Most people approved to use marijuana legally in Arizona complain of chronic pain related to back problems, severe headaches, injuries or arthritis, new stats show.

The Department of Health Services is keeping close track of nearly every facet of the program, and will also soon release the number of recommendations for medical weed that are being written by each physician. The names of the doctors won't be released, but the public will known whether physicians are recommending pot across the board, or if it's just a few adventurous doctors taking the plunge.

As of yesterday, 718 have applied to the DHS for medical marijuana cards, and 579 were approved. The latter, once they receive their cards in a few days, will be able to possess up to 2 1/2 ounces of marijuana, grow up to 12 plants (for now) and buy products from the marijuana dispensaries when they open this fall.

More than three-quarters of the applicants are men, and 20 percent of all applicants were between the ages of 18 and 30. (No one under 18 has applied.)

Chronic pain was listed as the qualifying condition in 85 percent of cases, though some patients reported multiple conditions. Six percent of applicants have cancer, while 1 percent have HIV or AIDS.

The DHS released info about which parts of the state the applicants were coming from -- you can click here for an Excel spreadsheet fileof that data. We found it somewhat interesting, (for instance, nearly 4 percent of all the applications came from Tempe -- but the applications seem well spread over the whole state, and nothing sticks out as a major trend.

In the meantime, we noticed that the Arizona Republic published something today about the federal stance on medical weed. We discussed this issue in a blog post from early February, but were interested to see in the Repub article that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona plans to soon issue an opinion about Arizona's voter-approved medical pot program. We'd asked the U.S. Attorney's Office about that back in February, as our blog post notes, but the office never got back to us.

We're not too concerned that the federal government will shut down the program. As we've noted in the past, the feds are raking in millions of dollars in extra income tax on marijuana dispensaries.

Every bud sold provides a few dollars in taxes that we won't have to borrow from our children.

I have been in chronic pain for the past 10 year's. I am on oxycontin, percecet, xanix, soma, exc. I have chronic pancreastitis, actue dibutibititlis, need l4 and l5 back fussions, have had 3 shoulder surgries, knee surgery, that is just to name a few. I did try marijuana one time and I could not believe the difference it made !!! They need to make drinking against the law and let people that can be help with medical marijuana legal. THIS JUST NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME. I would much rather even my children use marijuana than drink and go in black out's and kill some one or not even remember what they had done. People that suffer from chronic pain need help. NOT EVERY ONE THAT IS REQUESTING THIS IS DOING IT FOR UNLAWFUL REASON'S, THEY NEED HELP AND RELIEVE THEIR PAIN AS I DO. No one seem's to care that I have 5 grandchildren that I can not even hold or play with due to the pain it causes. IT SEEM'S TO ME THAT IF SOME ONE THAT REALLY NEED'S THIS THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT. I BET IF SOME ONE OF BIG STANDING NEEDED IT, THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT BUT THE LITTLE PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT MILLION AIRS CAN NOT GET ANY OF THE HELP THEY NEED. THIS IS JUST NOT FAIR OR RIGHT. THIS LAW NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AND CHANGED NOW. I know a lot of people do not agree with this but they are not in chronic pain day in and day out. I CAN NOT EVEN AFFORD A POWER WHEELCHAIR JUST TO GET AROUND IN BUT NO ONE CARES ABOUT THAT EITHER. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE THIS WAY WHEN THERE IS SOME THING THAT CAN HELP THEM. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY, THEY CANT FIND A WAY TO TAX IT, OR THEY ARE MAKING MORE BY BUSTING PEOPLE THAT NEED IT AND MAKING MORE MONEY THAN THEY WOULD IF THEY WOULD MAKE IT LEGAL.

People have NO CONCEPT of Pain until it's their OWN!!!  Then they'll do ANYTHING to relieve it...  just give em something!!!  I just watched my sister pass away of Pancreatic Cancer and it was the most HEART WRENCHING thing I've ever seen. She lost 30 lbs. that she didn't have to lose from 105lbs down to 75lbs. at her death.  She would Vomit a minimum of 7 times a day.  Had 25 lbs of FLUID (infection) in her stomach that had to be removed.  She had sores in her mouth SO BAD she couldn't eat, from the chemotherapy she was required to take.  Yet she lives in a NON Medical Marijuana State and therefore WOULDN'T utilize Marijuana to relieve her pain.  She didn't wish to take Painkillers because of the way they made her feel. The Pain was EXCRUCIATING, ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!  No one should have to go through that type of pain and be UNABLE to relieve it through the SAFEST way possible.  Maybe she'd have been able to EAT more than ONE cookie a day for the last 3 months.  It was terrible and I STILL get tears in my eyes, remembering the memories of that timeframe. He who says she didn't have the RIGHT to be pain free WITHOUT being lucid is amazingly not allowing her to DIE with DIGNITY!!!  It was the most DISGRACEFUL thing I've EVER seen, and that's what made ME PRO Medical Marijuana!
