Arizona AG's Investigation Into MCSO: What do $10,000, Gambling Debts, Pink Undie Funds, and an Abandoned Mine Shaft Have in Common? Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott

Documents about the sale of pink underwear will fit into an abandoned mine shaft. Dave Hendershott, on the other hand...
It doesn't take long in a voluminous Arizona Attorney General's Office report on the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (about three pages in) to find an interesting -- only-in-Arizona type -- yarn about embattled Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott, a kids baseball team, pink undies, gambling debts, and an abandoned mine shaft.

According to the report, Ben Armstrong, a former MCSO employee, told retired Mesa police Lieutenant Mike Galloway -- who was working as a private investigator at the time -- in a recorded 2004 interview that he believes he was canned by the Sheriff's Office because of the amount of dirt he had on Hendershott.

Hendershott and Armstrong each had a son on a traveling youth baseball team, which apparently benefited quite a bit from the bank accounts of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posse.

According to Armstrong, Hendershott withdrew about $10,000 -- from three different banks -- that he used to sponsor his and Armstrong's sons' baseball team to play in a tournament in California.

However, Armstrong claims, Hendershott had arranged for the donation of a free van service from Courtesy Chevrolet to take the team to the tournament, arranged for the team to stay at a National Guard Armory in California during the tournament, and had an MCSO truck -- filled with food from the MCSO inmate commissary -- to drive to the location of the California
tournament so the kids could eat.

As Armstrong notes in his interview with Galloway, he didn't know on what Hendershott had spent the $10,000, but he implied that it didn't seem as though it was spent on the team.

With Hendershott allegedly having most of the team's trip comped, where could $10,000 of Joe's posse money possibly have been spent? How about a cruise for Hendershott and his family.

Following the tournament, as the rest of the team went back to Arizona, Armstrong says Hendershott took his family to San Diego for a cruise along the California coast.

Apparently, $10,000 wasn't going to cover the bill -- according to Armstrong, at one stop on the cruise, Hendershott wasn't allowed to de-board the ship because he ran up a huge gambling debt he couldn't afford to pay.

According to Armstrong, Hendershott has a bit of a gambling problem, the report states.

You'd think someone in that type of situation might be in a little trouble. For Hendershott: no sweat.

According to Armstrong, Hendershott called one of Arpaio's posse members, Tom Wymus, who drove a "large sum of cash" to California to deposit with the cruise ship so the chief deputy would be allowed to leave. They didn't simply wire the money to the cruise company because they feared it would leave a paper trail, Armstrong alleges.

The money used to bail Hendershott off the cruise ship allegedly came from funds derived from the sale of the hottest fashion trend in all of Tent City: pink underwear. Which was money in intended to be used for the MCSO's Youth Assistance Foundation.

Hiding records of money intended to be spent on kids is no easy task -- unless you've got a pal with access to abandoned mine shafts.

According to Armstrong, Hendershott kept two sets of records for the sale of the pink underwear: One was turned over to then-Governor Janet Napolitano's office, the other was given to then-Arizona state Mine Inspector Doug Martin, a posse member, with whom Arpaio and Hendershott had become friends through their political affiliations.

Armstrong told Galloway that Martin said Hendershott had called him to Hendy's office and asked that he dispose of records that would show inaccurate accounting for the sales of the underwear. Rather than just torching the documents, Martin, Armstrong claims, hid them in an abandoned mine shaft.

This tale of alleged corruption is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Stay tuned for more.

Dear God, why don't mexicans just come to the USA legally? Why do they sneak through the desert? And why do they have so many children when they cannot afford to raise them? And why do they not fight for rights in their country? Why? WHHHHYYY!?

Again I have to say this..... What the fuck does your nonsense ramblings have to do with this story of MCSO corruption? Nothing. Seriously dude, shut the fuck up.

Is anyone willing to assumed that the new spineless A.G. Tom Horns is somehow connected to this whole scheme? Is this why he can't seek criminal indictments, much less pursue further criminal investigation into the MSCO, due to conflicts of interests?

The A.G. from what I understand, is supposed to be the state's top law dog. Yet, Tom Horns relogated the case to the Feds. And I wonder why. Is he weak and inept, or is he a part of this BIG probelem?

One has to wonder.

I think Horne, being the ever-inept lawyer he is, relegated the SCA deal to the feds because he would cry conflict of interest in every instance involving the Flaccid Fool and his SS goon squads.

Makes me all the more glad I voted for Rotellini..................................

i am not sure why Horney did not do his job, however, with all else the DOJ, and the feds have , itis just all that more they have to build and prosicute thier case . i wouldthink they are wanting more fish out of the pond . and holda great big fish fry all at one time . the Feds have in the past taken out whole towns of crooks , even took out some church leaders along with members of the city government and even business leaders , i do not see justthose at the MCSO going down, but many others , a great many others , with cases like these , thier going for a pond cleaning , and all fish are for the hook and fry .

Man I love these posts. I can learn all of the gory, disturbing details about these lunatics without having to leaf through hundreds of pages of reports. No wonder Arpiao is keeping the Munnell memo investigation under wraps, there's got to be a ton of stuff like this that he has to extract and delete.

The report from Buffoon's PI's "investigation" is 1,022 pages long, plus an additional 3 pages of "fact finding" from Buffoon himself...... But I agree with you that there's a lot of fat he needs to trim from the meat......

I just hope that all the dirt coming out on Henderblimp the last few weeks isn't an excuse for the Joker to say "I knew nothing! I'm just a victim too!"

lol well he would be an idiot if he did, basically admitting he is incompetent when it comes to supervising his employees. "How can a sheriff supervise the 6th largest county in the US, and not be able to supervise his own employees" is what Saban should be using next year in his campaign...

The thing is, his fans would buy it hook, line and sinker that he too was a victim. They aren't that smart.......

I have an acqaintance who is an expert at recovering items from abandoned mine shafts - would you like his name and number?

BTW - It is well known that the Mine Inspector position in the State Government is for people who conduct nefarious acts. There's basically a nazi/kkk group that is associated with mining museum and meets there regularly and has for many years. The mines fund them as a personal army if ever needed.

eh...abandoned mine shaft? Really? I don't doubt most of the story...but the mine shaft part seems...unlikely.

but who knows...we're talking about some weird people.

Sure, you jest... these people will do ANYTHING to avoid detection. A mine shaft to one of them is certainly plausible..

Whoa!! This just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I smell a lot indictments coming soon.

J-King, do you supposed that the "Flaccid Fool" was fully aware of Jabba's(Hendershott) "gambling" problem? Or was the old man "kept in the dark" on this one?

XSoldier
XSoldier

I highly doubt that the Flaccid Fool was "kept in the dark" on this one. After all, Hendy's poor financial management is quite evident.........

*He owed the feds about $70,000 in unpaid back taxes and liens*He owed the state about the same in unpaid back taxes and liens*He has filed bankruptcy protection at least 3 times*He had his $800,000 Peoria home foreclosed on

I agree with you about the indictments though.

And now, for any decent job one applies for, with a major company, a credit check is a mandatory thing. My guess is Dave wouldn't qualify to run a Walgreen's.

While I don't do that with my business I do believe I'd keep looking were one to come up with unpaid taxes, tax liens and multiple bankruptcies. At the very least, I'd ask for explanations of circumstances. And I own a piddling three service establishments...certainly not the largest Sheriffs office in the United States.

Now, not so fast Rob, Maybe they would hire him to do all those pap smears and breast exams that the cons seem to think women can have done there.

Let's not insult the Walgreen's, Rob. They would probably be smart enough to deny Henderblimp employment. Henderblimp wouldn't even qualify to be a shoeshiner...........

We've been reading for quite a while now of Hendershott's incredible financial irresponsibility and obligations, in disbelief in light of his salary, etc. This is the first we (the general public, anyway) have learned that he obviously has a gambling addiction....to say nothing of his misuse and abuse of public funds to cover it up.

XSoldier
XSoldier

Agreed and well said. I, too, had no idea that Hendershott had a gambling problem, and that he used public funds to cover it up. I've known about Joe for some time, my dad having once worked for the Old Fool as a detentions officer. He got out right before the '96 jailhouse killing of Scott Norberg. But I was unaware, until I started reading NT in 2004, about Joe and the MCSO's "true" colors........

I supposed you are right XS. The joKKKer goes out there making it seems as he knew nothing about the vast corruption going on for the past decade. Either he is making himself look dumber than he already is, or this is one of those tactics he uses to save his own fanny. If you recall that time when he was called into court to give an account onto something. He acted like he doesn't anything. This is that infamous line where he states that he never read his own book--"Joe's Law".

Something's up that senile ol fool's sleeve.

Yet another piece in the corruption puzzle that is MCSO.

When is the Flaccid Fool going to make Pinal County Shurf Paul Buffoon's investigative report available? I want to know why I am paying Chief Deputy Hendershott, Director Larry Black and Captain Joel Fox to stay at home when they need to be booted, indicted and perp-walked. I have the perp-walk CD done...........
