McDonald's Gets Some McLove as Arizona Legislators Put the Kibosh on Happy Meal Bans; Bill Awaits Governor Jan Brewer's Approval

Have a McCrappy plastic toy too.

The Arizona Legislature's had a busy couple of weeks -- Governor Jan Brewer signed a bill banning imaginary abortions and the state Senate's trying to make sure Arizonans can't vote a Kenyan into the White House -- and on Wednesday, the Legislature voted to keep government paws off their Happy Meals.

After a 25-4 vote from the Senate approving House Bill 2490, the bill now awaits a signature from Governor Brewer.

The text of the bill states the regulation of consumer incentive items -- like the oft-debated McDonald's Happy Meal toys -- is a "statewide concern," and bans any further regulation of the items by any Arizona county, city, or town.

According to the legislation, "consumer incentive items" are more than just toys accompanying fatty and salty meals for kids -- the bill hosts protection for any coupons, club memberships, crayons, and other general swag given out with meals by restaurants and convenience stores.

Bans on Happy Meal toys have been all the rage across the country since San Francisco put a partial prohibition on such meals with toys in December, and our New York sister paper the Village Voice reports that council members in the Big Apple are trying to get rid of the toys, too.

All this has caused McDonald's to regularly defend the Happy Meal, but it only recently began offering political advice through Twitter:

"Families say our food & toys r part of fun McD's meal. We trust families 2 make right food choices. Politicians should too"

Upon Governor Brewer's signature, Arizona becomes the first state to ban the banning of Happy Meal toys and other such junk, beating out Florida's similar legislation -- Senate Bill 366 -- which currently is on hold in that state's budget committee.

Neither Ronald McDonald nor the Hamburglar has yet issued a statement regarding the legislation.

It's a pressing issue, and quite current; Susan Brock apparently enjoyed several toys with her happy meals, and we can't get in the way of that sort of action can we?

This is what happens when you elect people who celebrate their disdain for education: you get cat-lady crazy legislation from a bunch of idiots.

This is what a government of Tea Party officials acts like, America. Don't be an Arizona. Don't vote for tea-baggers.

lol this just makes the legislature look so damn stupid, Im not sure it can be topped. They announce just last week that they want to make people obese and who smoke pay a 50$ fee for health care, and then prohibit a law that meant to discourage obesity...yes, i see the logic!!

The states are the laboratories of democracy. Arizona is the meth lab of democracy.

Who said we're not a progressive state? We're way ahead of the rest of the country on this crap.

Wow, look a Republican measure I can finally support. Jeez, it's been so long I forgot what it felt like. Sorry guys, I can see why this one was passed, this banning toys in happy meals crap is more ridiculous than passing legislation to keep it from happening. I mean, sure they could have been a little more productive and worked on some job creation bill, but at least they banned one small form of idiocy. Maybe next year they'll be a little more productive.

Why the hell do we need a useless, do-nothing statute like this on the books?

Forcing McDonald's to give toys in happy meals? Come on.

I see why businesses don't want to relocate here. Gov. Jan Brewer signs useless, do-nothing statutes like this.

This ranks right up there with the law that was passed several years ago protecting vegetables from being disparaged by people's comments. The law came about because of an offhand comment by then President Bush about broccoli. But I am sure the vegetables appreciated it !!!

The state want's to control a woman's right for an abortion, it has its own State Gun, and protects the free market economy by ensuring that if I purchase a box of Cracker Jacks, it may have legally have a toy. Meanwhile Rome is burning and Nero is playing the violin.

Which idiot drafted this legislation?

While McDonald's food is certainly more dangerous than marijuana, I still can't support anti-McDonald's legislation. If the public wants to poison itself with that trash, more power to them. Let natural selection do its thing.

Where are the job-creation bills? These conservative Repug idiots keep worming themselves into our privace under the guise of "smaller goverment", yet nothing they do is creating jobs. It's a bunch of laws that keep us down, under the watchful eye of the morality police, and take away more rights. I know that doesn't really concern this bill 100%, but I just can't stand this conservative idiocy that our llegislature is pushing. Who voted for these people? This is insane.

What a stupid waste of time and resources arguing about banning happy meals.

David, the $50 was intended as a punishment fee, not a cost of health care. Most people don't qualify for the health care in the first place, but those who do would have to pay a 'fine' if they didn't quit smoking or lose weight within a certain period of time under that health care provided. At least that's my understanding..

Nah, next year their planning a bill banning the inclusion of vibrators in Adult Happy Meals.

But, we do have a state gun to shoot our detractors with. If a Colt is used the presumption is of self-defense...

We take our kids there about once every 3 or 4 months. Our daughter (4) usually says she never wants to eat there again afterwards but of course forgets that in a couple months. Our son (7) just likes the playground and almost never finishes his meal. My wife and I never eat there (we sometimes sneak something in).

This should help create jobs at McDonalds, right? Or at least keep them safe for a while.

Between Arpaio going after the PeiWei's, McDonalds, janitors and car wash workers and this piece of legislative genius Arizona can be assured there will be no lack of minimum wage jobs.

Heck, there's still enough time in this session for them to change the state motto to "would like fries with that?"

Mistalee

Right, because things would be better if those people were obese, smokers AND $50 poorer.

Legalize drugs, but not in the legislature. Your representatives are apparently already high on crack.
