Jose Canseco's Latest Attempt to Stay Relevant: Managing/Playing for Yuma Scorpions

The Yuma Scorpions announced today that Canseco will be the latest addition to their squad. But he won't just be managing -- the team says he'll be its designated hitter and a first baseman, too.
"I'm excited about my first chance to manage a club in professional baseball and to begin to transition my career to helping younger players and giving back to the game," Canseco says in a team press release. "But I know I can still play and hit, so this player/manager opportunity was just what I was looking for."
Canseco is widely credited with introducing steroids to baseball -- and outing their use by the same players he claims to have injected with performance-enhancing drugs, including Mark McGwire -- so these "young players" shouldn't be surprised if the help Canseco provides comes in a syringe.
The gig with the Scorpions probably isn't the triumphant return to baseball for which the 1986 rookie of the year was hoping -- the team plays in the North American League, an independent league with no ties to any Major League Baseball franchise.
Canseco, in fact, claims he's been "blackballed" by MLB.
According to the team, Canseco already is in Yuma getting ready for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to begin May 24. A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow to further pimp Canseco's arrival.
