Governor Jan Brewer Probably Will Sign Bill Designed to Guilt Women Out of Having Abortions

The Arizona Senate gave final approval earlier this week to the second of two controversial abortion bills to pass through the Legislature this year. This one's aimed at guilting women out of ending their pregnancies and places more restrictions on abortions by pill.

HB 2416, approved 18-10 by the Senate on Wednesday, forces abortion doctors to offer patients the opportunity to look at ultrasound images of the fetus, and listen to its heartbeat -- a move to basically try to scare or guilt women out of having an abortion.

GOP lawmakers call it "informed consent."

It also adds stiffer regulations to RU-486 -- a pill that chemically causes women to miscarry often used for early-term abortions -- that would subject the procedure to the same regulations as surgical abortion.

Under the proposed law, only doctors would be allowed to perform abortions by pill, while nurse practitioners, currently allowed to administer the drug, would not.

Doing so, officials from Planned Parenthood say, would block access of early-term abortions to women living in rural communities. The group says that by preventing early-term abortions by over-regulating the pill will lead to more late-term, potentially riskier abortions.

The passage of the bill comes just days after Governor Jan Brewer signed another controversial abortion bill into law that makes it a crime for a physician to perform an abortion if the woman is ending the pregnancy because of the race or gender of the child.

As we've noted (and noted and noted), there is no evidence to suggest that women having abortions for either of those reasons is even an issue in Arizona -- and the lawmaker who drafted the bill refuses to provide evidence that he claims shows it is an issue.

As Capitol Media Services' Howard Fischer points out, with a pro-life Republican governor like Jan Brewer running the show (as opposed to Democrat Janet Napolitano, who vetoed almost every anti-abortion bill that crossed her desk), it's open season for extreme right-wingers to get wacky abortion bills passed in the Grand Canyon State.

The bill now heads to Brewer's desk, where it probably will be signed into law.

I'm in my second trimester here, I was feeling ambivalent about carrying to term, however due to recent developments, I've decided to terminate the pregnancy. This state now offers little to no assistance for lower-income single parents(I was a victim of date-rape, hence my initial ambivalence), and due to that, I would struggle every inch of the way, as I am alone, and completely unprepared. And so, I will be getting an abortion, yes thats right Janny, even with your new laws being passed I'm going to make the CHOICE not to bring a child into this increasingly fucked up world of ours. I know its for the better, because this will leave one less child from having to suffer being a third-world American, and it would prevent the tax-payers from having to support an unwanted child. (via SSI, Foodstamps, Access, etc.) Now, while I will be forced to hear the heart beat, I will not be deterred, despite the stigma that surrounds people like me. I just wanted to say, thanks Jan.. for making an extremely difficult thing, that much more difficult. You're a cunt, and you need to accept that not everyone shares the same ideological values as you and the rest of the sheep. STAY THE FUCK OUT OF MY UTERUS.

The fact that Zonies are dumb enough to elect representatives like Brewer and Pearce strongly suggests that ALL Arizona women should get abortions.

Why do they seem to want to feds to stay out of our business but then the AZ GOP wants to controll more of our lives? You can't have your cake and eat it to people. You can't preach the fact that we want the government smaller and demand they stay out of our lives but then you go and force the government to intrude DRASTICALLY in just this part of our lives!!!!!!

Arizona is a retirement dumping grounds for the old and dying. They make up the majority of registered voters here in Sandland. It is these geriatrics and geezers that keep electing the aging politicos. Where their Alzheimer's stricken minds are stuck in times of yore and "Jim Crow". Its sad.

If you ask them, it's all about keeping it local. They want us to believe that passing nutty laws at the state level is fine because every state is "sovereign" (which is complete horse shit). What they don't get is, simply up and moving out of a state that's become a cesspool of hate and right-wing extremism is not a practical solution for 99% of people.

It's only a matter of time before Jim Crow-type laws are re-introduced and pass along party lines quite easily through the state legislature. We're rapidly moving backwards in this state, and it's going to kill us.
