Senate Passes Legislation to End Distribution of Spanish-Language Election Material

Arizona Senate
Rookie senator, veteran boot-licker.
The Arizona Senate passed legislation yesterday that would eliminate Spanish translation of election materials in information booklets distributed by the Secretary of State, first reported by the Yuma Sun.

Russell Pearce acolyte -- or is it wannabe? -- Sen. Steve Smith, R-Maricopa, introduced the measure.

Aside from it being an unnecessary and racist bill, it's possibly illegal, or so Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Phoenix, argues. The bill, she says, runs afoul of the Voting Rights Act -- the 1965 piece of legislation aimed at ending racism at the polls in Arizona and other states.

Sand Land is one of 9 states that needs "preclearance" from the Department of Justice to make any election law changes. The booklets, as they're currently made, have received that preclearance. Smith says his bill doesn't change election law and argues that the state can meet its legal obligations by posting Spanish materials on the Internet.

That probably won't fly with civil rights attorneys at the DOJ if the bill passes, but that isn't the point. This is about intimidating Hispanics into leaving Arizona, one way or another.

The Texas Observer has a piece up about the bill this evening, arguing "folks in power in Arizona don't want anything in their state that doesn't look or sound like they do."

And they'll step over federal law to make sure that happens.

Russell Pearce's infamous SB 1070 bragged on its face that it was about "attrition through enforcement," or forcing Hispanics out by creating an environment so unfriendly to them that they would leave Arizona. Smith is a loyal toad for Pearce in their crusade against immigrants.

It could be a good idea to have some Spanish-language election paraphernalia for the benefits of the people living in Spain. Some natives cannot understand well English so it is much better to translate it to their own languages to avoid any conflicts. Election is a very important time that should be given importance by everybody.

There is nothing racist about it. This is AMERICA. The majority of AMERICAN CITIZENS speak ENGLISH. If you cannot speak ENGLISH, then you should not be voting. Voting requires one to be knowledgable of current affairs. I'm sick and tired of you spanish-speaking illegal alien harboring, freeloading roaches crying about rights and calling everyone racists. FK you. Go back to your country and clean it up rather than cowardly running here and demanding everything be given to you. You people have no dignity. COWARDS and LEECHES. I fully support this piece of legislation. If it goes to a ballot, I will vote in favor of it.

You are an ignorant asshole. This country is comprised of a melting pot of immigrants you dumbass. You think everyone came here knowing how to speak English? Some people would like to stick to their roots in a foreign country. Where is your appreciation for diversity?

Usgovfail,

You fail to see that there are millions upon millions of US citizens both past and present that arrived here legally who did not speak or more importantly read or write English fluently, yet they voted! Some were from Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa, China, Korea, both Central and South America and so on...

The voting system that allows One Legal Citizen = One Legal Vote is what built this country, so when the senator makes no attempt to hide his prejudice by making it more difficult to cast One Legal Vote he is cheating the system by not hearing what those constituents are really saying weather it is written or spoken in English or Spanish.

As of this date there are no specific laws that dictates as a legal US citizen we need to learn to read, write and speak English as a first language, but there are specific laws that mandate our state to make voting material available in both Spanish and English so until you can raise enough votes to change the system then quit bitching!

This is the same mindless, xenophobic reaction that was extended to Irish, German, Italian, Russian and all other groups that immigrated here - in the 19th and early 20th centuries. When older people immigrate, nimrod, they are often past the age where they can acquire language skills to the extent that they can speak, understand and read English fluently - English, just in case you weren't aware, is one of the most difficult languages to acquire.

These are legal citizens, registered voters, lightning child, whose English skills may not be such that they can read a proposition on a ballot in English fluently - and yet, they, as concerned citizens, have a right and responsibility to vote.

Do you, superpatriot, speak a second language? Of course not - THIS IS AMERIICA (as you so profoundly informed us). But if you should ever get off your lazy ass and try to learn one, you would find that as an adult (which I assume chronologically you are, if not emotionally) you would have extreme difficulty acquiring fluency. English, with its several sources for words, is one of the most difficult to learn. For example, I refer to your posting - you seem to be a native English speaker and still haven't mastered expressing a coherent thought.

Immigrant groups had their own newspapers, in their own language, for adults who struggled to acquire second language skills. The adults often never learned perfect English speaking and reading skills, but their kids did. That's the way it works, genius.

Your intolerance is suggestive of the craziness that took place during the first World War, when speaking German was suppressed, when dachshunds (that's the little weenie dogs to a cretin like you) were killed, when sauerkraut was renamed "liberty cabbage."

Immigrant hating, ignorant nativists never learn. Too bad for you and Sen. Smith.

"This is the same mindless, xenophobic reaction that was extended to Irish, German, Italian, Russian and all other groups that immigrated here..."

Yeah, and I remember all those old-time election ballots that had instructions in German, Italian and Russian in addition to English. (Great argument! Good on you!)

Bottom line: if you immigrate to a country, learn the language well enough to function in your new home - no matter how old you may be.

And another thing - why aren't there ballot instructions in the languages of all of the Native American tribes here in AZ? They have a strong representation here as well - and they were here before anyone else was.

The arrogance and incredulence of the people reacting to this bill perfectly illustrates the hypocrisy of liberals. But this is "AMERIICA," right? (Does that extra "I" stand for idiocy?)

Bisbee Sux? Your point is moot. A very large share of votes cast in the US in the 1700's 1800's and early 1900's were cast by legal illiterate voters, yet their votes counted. "Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, the New York Times reported with pride the states made provisions for assisting illiterate voters at the polls". Symbols representing each party were printed on the ballot to assist voter's when selecting a candidate or public policy.

There is no existing law on the books that dictate English only!!! So until your racist peeps can raise the votes to change that fact then it will remain AS IS.

By not having ballots written specific for each Native Americans tribe means that they function well enough using ballots written in English or they have not lobbied their case to effect change. My opinion is that they represent such a small portion of the voting populous that they might not ever get a chance to vote with ballots written in their native tongue, however with the rising Hispanic population their voice carries more weight and soon will become a majority in most southwest states. So you better get used to it or learn to speak Spanish, Amigo

Not all Native languages are written, so the state is required to provide translators or allow a voter to take a bi-lingual person into the voting booth with them to translate the ballot from English to the Native language.

This bill is simply about keeping the GOP in power since they believe that Hispanics vote forDemocrats.

This bill isn't about illegals. It's about making it more difficult for US citizens to vote. How can any American think that is a good idea? Of course it's inspired by fear and hate of Hispanics. Who do think speaks Spanish in Arizona?

It's also another waste of money as the lawyers at Snell and Wilmer get to bill the state of Arizona another million defending the indefensible.

The whole thing is shameful, disgusting and very hurtful to this state.

Usgovfail

It is a waste of money that we print everything in spanish. How much extra money does the state spend (that the state does not have anyway) in a year on printing supplies so that some lazy people who don't want to bother to learn the majority language can vote for people who they don't pay for? Elected officials work for TAXPAYERS. CONSTITUENTS. Do you know what that word means? Look it up in the dictionary. Idiot.

Boy, I wouldn't move to Arizona now just based on principle. I would not want to live in any state or sector of people that can be this ugly and racist. Every American should be ashamed to include this state in The United Sates of America. Freedom and the desire for a better life is why many people and refuges came to this country. And yet we treat these people worse than any refuges that this country has harbored in years past. We did this to the Germans, Jews,Chinese, Japanese, Irish, American Indians, Italians, ...When will we ever learn? These are human beings. The Bible even has an opinion on how to treat aliens. And we aren't coming even close. Shame on you Arizona!

Yeah and those people came legally, became citizens and paid taxes to help the economy you phucking idiot. Good, don't come to Arizona. Illegal is not a race, it is a crime.

Just so you know, our fore-fathers didn't walk onto American soil with papers in hand. Instead they massacred the Indians and claimed their land as their own. Then they headed south and did the same thing to the Mexicans. We took half the country from them! It all goes back to the very beginning, when YOUR forefathers marched into this country as the first illegal aliens! And we as a country have treated immigrants poorly for hundreds of years. And some have tried the legal way, applying for asylum etc. and our country doesn't have a clue how to process them fairly. Many just give up after trying the legal way, don't want to return to poverty and bloodshed and then live in the shadows. You really need to educate your self before you start yelling at those who have.! And yes, Arizona, I wouldn't care to be associated with the bigotry and racism that you justify.

Why is it racist to drop Spanish from election materials? Does language denote race? No, it doesn't and it never has. Last time I checked English was still the language predominantly used in this so called country run by corporations. New Times can never bend over too far to take sides in any issue that said Spanish, Hispanic or Mexican. Why the need to take sides? How about siding with the common people against your white fascist dog running true bosses? Stir up some shit just like they tell you to, Fascist Times. Who the hell cares what The Texas Observer says? How about The National Enquier while you're at it? I don't know why I keep reading this rag.
