Rumors Fly That Our Story of Lovebirds Joel Fox and Larry Black is an April Fool's Day Stunt; It's Not, But We'll Take That as a Compliment

Brahm Resnik of Channel 12 thinks our Fox/Black love story is a hoax. C'mon -- wouldn't we have thrown Hendershott in there if it were a hoax?
Not long after we'd posted today's story about the love letters between Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Larry Black and his subordinate, Captain Joel Fox, someone we know asked us by e-mail whether the story was a hoax.

Someone else contacted another New Times employee, asking the same thing. Then Brahm Resnik, a star reporter for Channel 12 (KPNX-TV), published the following tweet:

resnik brahm tweet sca.jpg

True, such a thing isn't inconceivable, considering that New Times admits to publishing a few tall tales in the past. (Our most recent one contained the "news" that Phoenix Suns star Steve Nash was retiring from basketball for a career in Canadian politics.) However, New Times hoax stories typically have one thing in common: Anybody with half a brain can figure out something's fishy.

But no, the Fox/Black love story isn't a hoax. You can check for yourself by perusing the detail-rich SCA report that we published online last week. Local freelance reporter Nick Martin replied to Resnik's tweet a tweet by Lydia Guzman with the comment that "we'd have to see a copy from someone other than New Times to verify those PDFs are real." (Martin later reminded us that he'd noted in an earlier tweet that "the PDFs look legit.")

For sure, any journalist would want a firsthand look at the documents, without having to rely on other media outlets. However, we're confident that anyone who examines the massive SCA document we put online would have to admit that if it's not real, we ought to quit our job and go to work for Industrial Light and Magic.

Also, we hope many of you have noticed that we posted a follow-up article today that goes into more detail about the findings on Fox's computer, especially as it pertains to the SCA scandal.

Besides, it's only March 30.

In Arizona Elections should be held on April 1 each year. Hell it should be a state holiday honoring everybody that votes.

Actually, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department is a never-ending, not-so-funny, April Fool's joke.

I checked out all of the other local media outlets earlier today, regarding the unearthing of the bizarre trysts between Black & Fox. And none of them reported on it. Certainly not the suck-up FauxNoiseNetwork on channel 10. As "TommyC1" already noted--kudos to the New Times for being the first.

For the RepubliPUKES once they read the truth herein, may just be doing that--Puking and choking on their own words. After this was all revealed by NT. Whatever you can do to anger the enemy on the far right. Good job.

At this point I am feeling a great amount of empathy for the journalists at New Times. There is a massive amount of new information floating around and deadlines to meet. It has to be very difficult to treat even the smallest snippets of that information with the time needed for fairness and objectivity.... Kudos to all of you right now.

Yup. The New Times story about the real life "Broke Back Mountain" love story between Black and Mr. Faux is legitimate. Like I said previously, its too early for a "April Fool's" story. Speaking of "April Fools", it will be fun to guess what NT will write about.

Can't wait.

or should I say the persons that vote based on press releases and simple name recognition.

Mike, good point. It's more an on-going tragedy than any kind of joke. The problem, of course, starts with the cancer at the top, trickling down and spreading itself throughout the organization. This agency called MCSO can't begin to heal until the cancer called arpaio is removed. I would think April 1st would be the perfect for a host of indictments against a host of MCSO command staff.

My hat goes off to the professionals working at MCSO. The rest of you can go to hell, where you belong.

Thanks a bunch, Tommy. I certainly appreciate your readership and good comments. And Gerry -- "firehose" is right. And we haven't even seen the reports from the feds or from Babeu yet...

Tommy,

I second your opinion. The information is coming like a fire hose and it must be hard to keep up in a small journo / blog shop.

Speaking of overwhelming...

I think the Federal investigators are probably overwhelmed as well. They have had this stuff from the AG's office for a while. Further, they have developed considerably more information than is reflected in the AG disclosures.

I would also point out that I am quite anxious about the slow pace of the Federal investigations surrounding Arpaio, et. al. The actors in this story have literally decades of corrupt activity, deflecting blame, covering up, abuse of office. They are further quite hated and the tip lines have undoubtedly been overwhelmed with good tips and crank tips. I would guess that the number of "crimes" is in the hundreds or thousands. How many times has Joel Fox obstructed or lied about the SCA scandal? How many times has he told the complete truth? Was he conspiring with Larry and Dave to obstruct? Don't forget all the base crimes themselves. The land deals, the Stapley, Donahoe, Wilcox, etc. investigations and charges. What witnesses are credible? A witness interview leads to other witnesses or the re-interviewing of a previous witness. Just a single witness interview can lead to a whole track on obstructing justice, such as Lisa Allen being told to destroy things. Who gave that order to Black? I am sure they are digging and trying to turn someone on Hendershott and/or Arpaio. Nickel-bag has decades of scheming and corrupt behavior and skirting responsibility by insulating himself and just going a little over the line to avoid attention/detection.

There is an enormous pile of crimes being examined. If it were just one crime, then you look for the needle in the haystack and that can be a daunting task. But they are searching for a needle in a needle stack. They have to identify and track each needle and put it with the related needles logically and with evidentiary certainty. Such a process takes time. The pile of crimes must be somewhat large if a handful of federal prosecutors have been deputized as Maricopa County Attorneys to prosecute state crimes that come out of the federal investigations. Yet progress is still slow.

Not hearing anything about the progress is a hallmark of professional law enforcement organizations. In such a situation, we DON'T want charges filed that are not supported or will not stick with reasonable certainty. When charged, I believe that will be the end of potential for prosecuting these persons. If charges don't stick, I don't believe there will be a second chance unless they went out and murdered someone (again?).

I pray that I am reading the tea leaves right.

I am hopeful but less optimistic that Babeu will do a stand up job investigating the three at MCSO.

MCSO is loaded with good professional LE officers and staff. The cancer that Tommy speaks about metastasizes and spreads slowly and will attack those that are honest and with integrity but weak. Person by person, the cancer spreads based on the examples from the top. Some will never be affected and will never turn bad, even though MCSO has rewarded failure of integrity over the years.

Kudos to those that maintain and keep waiting for the next election.
