Kevin Towers Has a Plan To End the Misery At Chase Field: Less Attitude, More Talent

Think classy, you'll be classy.
It isn't just Forbes magazine that's noticed how miserable the Phoenix sports scene is.

New Arizona Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers saw it at Chase Field the day he took charge of the team last season.

In a recent piece in the New York Times, Towers recalls a conversation with Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson.

"I told Gibby at the end of the year, 'The culture feels so bad here; it's just blah.' I mean, you could walk in the clubhouse, even if you're a stranger, and go: 'Losers,'" he says.

But fret not, Phoenicians: he's got a plan to change the "culture" of the team.

Towers has rebuilt the team by trying to eliminate the biggest problems facing the Diamondbacks last season: an inability -- or downright refusal -- by hitters to make contact, and a lousy bullpen.

To that end, he signed Chicago White Sox reliever JJ Putz to be the team's closer and traded Mark Reynolds to Baltimore for relievers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio. The D-Backs are also relying on side-arming left-handed rookie Joe Paterson to be the team's LOOGY, or "Lefty One-Out GuY."

So far, the D-Backs are 1-4 in Cactus League games, although records mean nothing at the moment.

The Diamondbacks made some good moves in the offseason, most notably by signing Putz, who is one of the best relievers in baseball when he's healthy. But it takes more than a winning attitude, whatever that means, to turn a ballclub into a winner.
