Afghan War Army Vet Shot Victim Because He Said Marines Are Best Branch of Military. Parents Claim PTSD's to Blame

Jeremiah Pulaski
The Afghan war veteran fatally shot by a Glendale police officer early Saturday morning suffered from post-traumatic-stress disorder and alcoholism, his parents told police after the shooting, and, as an Army man, he apparently wasn't fond of the Marine Corps.

According to the police report, first obtained by KPHO, 24-year-old Jeremiah Pulaski shot 33-year-old Jason Taylor -- a complete stranger -- early in he mornng morning because Taylor had mentioned that he was considering joining the military and heard the Marines were the best.

Pulaski took offense and responded by pulling out a .45-caliber handgun and shooting him in the neck in front of a bar on West Greenway Road in Glendale.

Taylor's injuries were not life-threatening.

Pulaski fled the scene on his motorcycle and tried to shoot it out with a cop before being fatally shot by a Glendale officer.

As we noted in our earlier post about Pulaski, things didn't appear to be going well for the former soldier.

"I think Im gonna Just take off and work shitty jobs just to make enough to get to the next town. IM gonna be a drifter! I have a Rebel soul!" he posted on his Facebook page last Wednesday night.

Pulaski, it turns out, still was in the military at the time of his death. According to the report, he
was home on terminal leave with a discharge date in April.

His parents told police following the shooting that when he came home from combat, he suffered from PTSD and alcoholism.

A comment posted on out previousr post from a New Times reader who claims to have grown up with Pulaski validates his parents' claim -- and suggests he'd been having trouble adjusting to life outside of the military.

I grew up with Jeremiah Pulaski and he was a great guy.... I also was in the Army with him too.. I was stationed in Hawaii as he was in NY .. He did not get kicked out of the Army. Jeremiah did his 4 years honorably.... He went threw alot during his tour in Afghanistan and then when he came back they did not give him the help he needed... When your time is up they throw you to the curb.. The Army does not care what happens to you when you come back from war.. Your just a number to them.. Then when your time is up they send you packing. So like my self he was trying to find his place in life ie: get a job, school and try to catch up with your old buddys that you have not seen since you left for boot camp.. Jeremiah as well as my self had a hard time finding a job.. You go from having a nice income to having not a penny to your name.. So yess it is vary hard to come home and get use to the civilian life.. All I have to say is he will be missed vary much!!! May he RIP....

My sincerest sympathy to the entire Taylor family. Jason is and will be struggling for his life to return to any type of normalcy because of this incident, and may never fully recover. Such incomprehensible violence committed on an entire family. My sincerest sympathy and prayers are going out to you.

What a douchebag. Kid was right, the USMC is the best, and this douchbag proved it when he pulled a gun, aimed, and hit him in the neck with a superficial wound....then attempted and failed to shoot a cop. Poor Army training gets you dumb and dead. Point proven.

Any Infantry Marine that pulled a gun on this guy would have dropped him with 2 to the chest, one to the head, then put a gun in the dead guys hand and call 911.

Guns and alcohol in Arizona's bar is a dangerous mix. What is it going to take for the legislators to wake up?

Dude, why dont you ppl show some Respect for my buddy, talking shit while he lies dead, have some consideration for a soul no longer physical, he flew with wings of courage and bones of steele.... not pathetic jousts man, embrace his death as a lesson and learn from it, your time can come at any given time, and you would have ppl talking shit on your news report, come now we the ppl should have more consideration for those who served and died rather than trample on what remains of the man.

Taylor's injuries were not life threatening? He was shot in the head, is in a coma and is likely severly brain damaged. The tragic impact to him, his family and his 18 month old daughter is incomprehensible. More sympathy needs to be given here, not just to this monster (regardless of how he got that way).

I completely agree with you! I know Jason and his family and things will never be the same. I pray he pulls through and makes a complete recovery. It sickens me that the news is giving the shooter sympathy because he was a war vet, but not one is giving Jason the justice, he is the innocent one. Now all of his family and friends are having to deal with the what if's and possible complications for Jason. It's hard being in another state while a loved one is going through such a tragedy.

If he was so innocent then maybe he wouldnt have approached someone leaving the bar and started a fight with them. Sometimes people need to learn their place. Its a sad story all around.

JE

Im guessing you were not there! I was and he did not start a fight with anyone! You should be ashamed of your self for making such a stupid comment!

It's disappointing to me to see this become an issue of how sad it is that "the youth of America are being impacted once they return to US soil from war" rather than the fact that an innocent guy got shot in the head. I really find it hard to accept that this should be an issue of a guy not getting the help that he needed, being a veteran. I can say this because I was at this bar when it all happened, and I saw Jason fall to the ground and bleed like I've never seen a human bleed. I don't care whether or not the shooter was back from Afghanistan and suffering. We're not defending our country any more, and if you can't be safely back into the general population, you shouldn't be--and you should especially not be at a bar tying one on when you know you have some mental and personal limitations in your life right now. No one has mentioned that Jeremiah had an illustrious violent past, assaulting higher ranking officers while in the army, and being tried for those crimes. I blame the armed services for not taking proper care of this individual the first time when those crimes happened. Instead they send him back out so he can nearly take the life of an innocent human being. My thoughts and prayers are with Jason and his wife that I met very briefly that night before the hysteria. I hope to god he returns to a normal life...

The two issues are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, this is a taste of what the US visits on select portions of the third world on a daily basis. When a young man mindfucked by the military comes home in body but in mind is still a killer for god and country, this is the consequence. The chickens come home to roost, the murder of innocents gets closer to us than we would like.

I don't know if I could respect any military personal who tried to, attempted or even kill innocent U.S. civilians without justification, especially a LEO. Despite that individual serving our country.

Gee, this seems to be a perfect example of why everyone in the State of Arizona should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon. Imagine, an Army vet.

The USMC does have a very rigorous boot camp program that I've heard is up to 16 weeks long. I also believe that the Marines are the highest paid branch of the military.

I would prefer joining the Navy or the Air Force. I did not like my time as a soldier and always felt I was better qualified for one of those branches.

I do salute and thank Mr, Pulaski for his service. I hope he gets full military honors when he is laid to rest.

you could have joined up with the Navy or Air Force after you got out of the Army. both of them would have taken you.

Nweng

There is no "highest paid" service in the military, pay is set by congress and is the same across the board; an E5 in the AF makes the same as an E5 in any other service. However, they may make more due to special pay, like combat or hazardous duty; but, that depends on the individual, not the branch.
