Sheriff Paul Babeu Responds to Border Mayors' Letter -- and He's Not Happy

paulbabeuportrait.jpg
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu
Since our earlier post about a letter sent by several mayors of cities along the U.S./Mexico border to Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, the sheriff's responded with a letter of his own.

The letter from the border mayors to Babeu asked that he tone down some of the rhetoric he's been using in describing the violence of Mexican drug cartels spilling into the United States -- namely, his recent assertion that an armed showdown in the desert between law enforcement agencies and drug cartels is imminent.

Check it out here.

Babeu's spokesman, Tim Gaffney, sent New Times the sheriff's response, which you can see in its entirety below.

Pinal County is the number one county in the United States for drug and human trafficking. Our pursuits and drug seizures tied to drug and human trafficking far exceed those of the four border counties.  The threat from an unsecured border, where 241,000 illegals were apprehended last year by the border patrol and an additional 400,000 got away.  Those are failing grades by anyone's score card.

Some speak of improved safety, while we have doubled the confiscation of drugs, calls to the Border Patrol and had 340 vehicle pursuits this year -- up from 286 the year before and 142 the year prior.  We have a serious public safety threat in my county, due to an unsecured border with Mexico and our nation should be highly concerned about the more dangerous national security threat that is presented with OTM's and persons from countries of interest (that harbor/sponsor terrorist or speak ill of the USA).

Just this week, the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Pinal County has a minimum of 75-100 mountains or high terrain features that are occupied by Mexican Drug Cartels.  How have we arrived at this point in America that this is acceptable to have foreign born criminals controlling safe passage in an entire region of our state?

If these Mayors were serious about dialogue with me, they would have called, or at least waited for there letter to arrive by mail at my office, prior to releasing their letter to the media.  They have done the very thing they accuse me of doing.  I do not represent these Mayors or their citizens, yet I do represent the nearly 400,000 citizens of my county and the overwhelming majority of Arizonans, who laugh at Secretary Napolitano's suggestion that our border is more secure than ever.

Perhaps Paul will fill us in on his methodology for counting all the "illegals" that got away in his oh so besieged county? 400,000 is such a nice big round number Paul, but where did you get it? All the sheriffs who actually physically share a border with Mexico, do their jobs quietly and efficiently without constantly holding forth with total bullshit on the Fox Propaganda Network complaining about how badly overworked they and their deputies are by the vast influx of your seemingly fantasy cartel soldiers who somehow made it past the fence, the Border Patrol, the National Guard, the other sheriff's deputies, the undercover fish and wildlife narcs, the DEA, state narcs, finally your deputies and still managed to take over the mountains of your county without being seen by anyone but you and Louie Puroll. Then they all magically disappear when a huge police presence searched specifically for them after they supposedly shot poor old tall tale teller Louie? Is that why you and your depiddy dawgs are the only alleged cops who ever have any contact with this alleged massive cartel presence out there in your hills sheriff chromedome? Seems like the people of Pinal County will definitely be wanting to replace you with a genuine law enforcement officer who will stop any actual drug cartel activity occurring on their watch, rounding up all the alleged heavily armed drug runners rather than listening to you on Fox every other night whining about how overworked you are without ever actually arresting a single cartel gunman that you constantly complain about. Babeu, you are truly one sorry excuse for an Arizona county Sheriff.

Let me start off by telling you Sherriff Babeau that I do not recall you ever visiting Nogales. Not sure if you have been to Douglas or San Luis but my guess is NO. If you have been to any of these wonderful border towns and have felt unsafe then I am safe in assuming that your levels of paranoia are a bit higher than the average Jose....Anyway, did you ever reach out to any of these Mayors or the Sherriff's of any of these towns to ask how you could all work together before you went on Fox News or the O'rielly Factor to grand stand and try and make a name for yourself?????? Again, my guess is NO. For months you have been trashing these border communities and you have never set foot on any of these border The only time you were even close to the border was when you made a commercial with John McCain. And now that the election is over he hasn't even bothered to address anything regarding the border. I am a Nogalian and I love my town. It is a safe place to live and we have a wonderful community of people. Yes there is a lot of drug related violence in Mexico, there always has been. Our border patrol and customs agents are doing a wonderful job of stopping these drugs from coming into the United States. Your statements are irresponsible and unwarrented but you know what? What are we to expect from someone who would appear on the "Pro-White: Politicas Cesspool" radio program. The comments you made on fox yesterday were tasteless but what else can you expect from a misinformed racist disguised as a public servant. You made a comment once that the drug cartels control your county in the area where your officer staged a shooting......well then Sherriff you are obviously not doing your job, because drug cargtels do not control Nogales, Douglas or San Luis. Their citizens do!

Maybe he(Babalooney) attended the same schools that his "perceived" cartel members attended...I believe that your governor has the same problem...If you check Arpiojos education background you will find similar "trademarks"...All three combined would not qualify as security guards...not even Walmart would hire these "experts" (in their own MINDS)...If Pearce was still "fixing" and selling drivers licenses, maybe Mr. Clean(Pearce) would hire them as custodians...Arizona does not deserve.. incompetents...We have enough in the White House...

Almost all of the comments are irrational. It is quite clear that the border is not safe.Whatever that sheriff is doing is positive with the lack of complete border protection by the Federal Government. The influx of illegals and cartel drug infiltrators needs to be stopped.

You simple minded fools get all your information from the Fox Propaganda Network. You wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and kissed you on the lips since you believe all the total nonsense that is spewed by Fox. I am not sure what this Sheriff means by by most anything in Pinal County! The two most dangerous cities in Mexico are Cuidad Juarez across from El Paso and Reynosa across from McAllen. There are more drug seizures in Texas the people in Arizona. Texas has 1,250 miles of border with Mexico. Arizona has what 300 miles. Monterrey, the strong hole of the Zetas is 150 miles south of Laredo. There are more shoot outs in Mexican cities that border or close to bordering Texas than Arizona. Who will the Pinal County Sheriff shoot it out with. The main Cartels, Gulf, Sinoloa, La Familia, Beltran Levya and Zetas are fignting in a area from Monterrey west to CD Juarez east to Matamoros south CD Victoria and back west to Monterrey. Arizona is no where near that. Sorry Sheriff. CB

I usually disagree with the bald, brainless, butt-buddy of the Flaccid Fool of MCSO and this is no exception.

There hasn't been a drug cartel showdown in years, since at least Prohibition (the 1920's) and Baboon knows it. If he is so 'concerned' about Pinal County's citizens' safety, he should link up with Gov. Jan Brewer and Attorney General Tom Horne's bullshit 'counterclaim' against the feds.

Baboon should get in line behind Senate President Russell Pearce, Sen. Ron Gould, the Flaccid Fool of MCSO, Hendy, Fox, Black, Candy Ass Thomas, Aubuchon, and Alexander when they are wearing their straitjackets and being heavily sedated to get those voices out of their heads.....

First, he doesn't know the difference between "There" and "Their". Second, he doesn't "represent those mayors or their citizens" but he believes he represents the majority of Arizonans? What goofy logic. What bad writing skills. What a heat-seeking Sheriff.

He pulls fake statistics out of his ass with great facility. Kinda like a former Senator from Wisconsin and his list of Commies in the State dept. OK, big mouth, show us the Homeland Security memo and name the "minimum of 75-100 terrain features" being used as observation posts by the drug cartels in your county...How's about capturing just one of the supposed scouts up on those "minimum of 75-100 terrain features" being manned by the cartels. Sorry, Paul, but this is some CRAZY shit! The reason those border mayors are upset is that Babeu, Dever and Arapio are using the border as a "bloody shirt" to further their own political agendas, and are harming legitimate businesses during a major economic downturn.

Well stated, Mike. Let's all agree that there is a need for border enforcement. In fact, let's go beyond on that and point out that I have actually seen Border Patrol working in border counties while I have driven on I-8 to San Diego. Damned if I haven't even seen military helicopters working both sides of the border fencing.

If Babeu is aware of all these landscape feature points being used by the cartel, WHY isn't he working WITH BORDER PATROL to eradicate these features, or at least smoke or gas out the occupants?

I have to wonder if the deputy recently terminated from PCSO isn't one of the 'lookouts' in one of those landscape features? According to the story Puroll told to Mr. Rubin he had been offered employment by the cartel. I guess this would be the perfect opportunity for Puroll to take that employment since he likely will never be employed again as a law enforcement officer. At least not if a polygraph or voice stress analysis test is involved.

Babeu has learned well from his mentor to the north. Facts have nothing to do with sensationalizing a situation to garner votes and money.

Mexicans are fleeing the ravages of a civil war spawned by our failed policy of drug prohibition.

The second biggest business during alcohol prohibition in Detroit was liquor at $215 million a year and employing about 50,000 people. Authorities were not only helpless to stop it, many were part of the problem. During one raid the state police arrested Detroit Mayor John Smith, Michigan Congressman Robert Clancy and Sheriff Edward Stein.

When it comes down to business, the Mexican Cartels, just like their 1920s American counterparts, also like to be nonpartisan. They will buy-out or threaten politicians of any party, make deals with whoever can benefit them, and kill those who are brave or foolish enough to get in their way.

Thanks to prohibition we're about to lose all semblance of that once ordered, prosperous and safe society. Myself, along with many others, have been debating prohibitionists on this for many years. We have shown what destruction prohibition has wrought on all the civil institutions of this once great nation, -we've always provided facts and statistics - they, the prohibitionists, have countered with either lies, personal abuse or even serious threats of violence.

Ending the insanity of drug prohibition by legalized regulation, respecting the rights of the responsible users and focusing on addiction as a sickness, like we do with alcohol and tobacco, may save what remains of our economy and civil institutions along with countless lives and livelihoods. Prohibition continues unabated for shameful political reasons. It cannot, and never will, reduce drug use or addiction.

Prohibition has permanently scarred our national character as well as our individual psyches. Our national policies and cultural practices have become pervaded by the fascistic, prohibitionist mind-set which has turned our domestic police force into a bunch of paramilitary thugs who often commit extra-judicial beatings and executions while running roughshod over our rights in order to "protect us from ourselves".

When we eventually manage to put the horrors of this moronothon behind us, we'll need to engage in some very deep and honest soul-searching as to what we want to be as a nation. Many of our freedoms have been severely circumscribed or lost altogether, our economy has been trashed and our international reputation for being "free and fair" has been dragged through a putrid sewer by vicious narrow-minded drug warrior zealots who are ignorant of abstract concepts such as truth, justice and decency. We'll need to make sure that such a catastrophe is never ever repeated. This may mean that public hearings or tribunals will be held where those who’ve been the instigators and cheerleaders of this abomination will have to answer for their serious crimes against our once prosperous and proud nation.

Each day you remain silent, you help to destroy the Constitution, fill the prisons with our children, and empower terrorists and criminals worldwide while wasting hundreds of billions of your own tax dollars. Prohibition bears many strong and startling similarities to Torquemada's inquisition, it's supporters are servants of tyranny and hate. If you're aware of but not enraged by it's shear waste and cruel atrocities then both your heart and soul must surely be dead.

Millions of fearless Egyptians have recently shown us that recognizing oppression also carries the weight of responsibility to act upon and oppose that oppression.

Repeal Prohibition of recreational drugs!!!!

Prohibition is the worst scourge visited on this country since legalized slavery. You're right malcolmkyle - we've been down that road before with alcohol. Contining to do the same thing and expecting a different outcome, IS the definition of insanity.

Babeau, and the other LEOs, don't want the drug wars to end because that's how they get their money to live on. So, LEOs have a vested interest in continuing the criminalization of the recreational drugs and should not be allowed a voice in the debate.

So too do politicians who have a vested interest in scaring voters about drug users (the VAST majority of which are functional contributing members of our society) to get re-elected.

The government certainly doesn't want to discontinue their support of the cartels which occurs through the supression of supply through the laws against the recreational drugs and the levels of spending on enforcement, which vastly (and artificially) increases the economic value of their product).

What a lying moronic asshole Babeu is! He's been making up stories so long he no longer has any conception of truth. I guess he's angling for a slot on the Fox Propaganda network once he's fired for his lies and obfuscation about the border just as Louie was. He will fit in perfectly at the FPN, not a word of truth in any of their faux newscasts. Back in September during an interview with Greta Van Susteren (Fox News) we learned from Babeu:

1. He and 10 police chiefs in Pinal County have type A personalities and don’t like to admit they can’t do something.

2. Two cave dwellers have been found in two months. [that was September; now there are 100?]

3. Babeu told Greta “…and they have binoculars, and they have night vision and they have supplies of food. And they can see literally 30, 40 miles…and they control the movement and the access. Now, they don’t have thousands of soldiers there, in terms of that control but anybody who understands military tactics know, when you control the high-points of terrain, and you control movement in that area, that that is unacceptable here to be in America.” When Greta asks if they had weapons, Babeu answered “…these two, they did not.”

Loveless

Wow, 100 high points occupied by drug cartels in Pinal alone, huh? You'd think Brewer would have declared a state of emergency or something!

Why doesn't Baboo go, like, arrest them. Sounds like he's doing an awful job keeping Pinal safe. He would be doing everyone in Arizona, including those of us who like to climb mountains, a huge favor if he would list these 100 dangerous high points.

I'll be expecting this list immediately!!!! Lives are in danger, right?? Right? I mean Right?

So, I guess from what Babeu is saying, it really ISN'T MCSO that is the only agency doing immigration enforcement, is it? I bet this really pissed off the Flaccid Fool. Little Joe Paul saying something in conflict with the Old Fool... Say it ain't so...

["I do represent the nearly 400,000 citizens of my county and the overwhelming majority of Arizonans, who laugh at Secretary Napolitano's suggestion that our border is more secure than ever."]

Only in your imagination, Little Joe Paul. Only in your imagination.

Babeu has three years of law enforcement experience with Chandler prior to being elected shurf of Pinal. In most professional law enforcement agencies one is considered a rookie for five years. Babeu is even less qualified to be shurf than the fat, old guy at MCSO... and that is VERY hard to believe.

How did we go from two caves in September to 100 caves in February? Are the Homeland Security folks and Babeu drinking eachother's kood-aid now?

Babeu, its your county. Find the DHS claimed "100 mountains or high terrain features that are occupied by Mexican Drug Cartels" and arrest the 100 or so occupants (assuming they are doing something wrong). Problem solved. No more war cries. No announced battles. No more complaining about Janet putting us in a trance. Find the 100 sites, depopulate the sites, and call it quits. We are tired of the game of claims. Both sides are believing eachother's numbers now.

Babeu's troops cleared a cave in September (Saw Tooth) that was occupied by an older Mexican man trying to find a ride to Sacramento. No guns, no drugs, no nothing.

Help me out. Has anyone found an OCCUPIED cave or lookout or outpost in Pinal since the first two? And now they are talking about 100? That leaves 100 sites with at least 100 cartel operatives. Go to work, sheriff, and quit complaining about the mayors. The three of them have accomplished something you were never able to do (being elected mayor).

I am waiting to see the occupied 100 outpost/lookout sites in the Vekol Valley corridor. I want to see the sites, the occupants, and not the continuing claims of sites by DHS or Babeu. I call B.S. on both sides.

BTW, Babeu, your county only has 341,000 residents (2009) and you do not represent the overwhelming majority of Arizonans.

Rockdog48

Get out and find out for yourself since you won't believe those that have. We of the ACS have run out 2 separate spotters up on Int. 8 (Big Horn and Antelope Pk.)and destroyed many other layups. Otherwise just keep running your mouth/keyboard because that's all you are good at.

OK, Rockdog. You keep telling everyone to get out in the field like you in the ACS, so tell us more. What is the ACS and how do we contact it? What kind of military training have you had, and where have you patrolled? Please give us GPS coordinates, if you really want us to see for ourselves. Perhaps most important, why have you patrolled and exactly what have you found? I don't have statistics, but it's common sense that anyone who goes looking for something they are already convinced is in existence will likely interpret anything they see or hear as evidence of their belief. If you want the readers to take you seriously, quit calling names and give us some details.

Tommy Collins

North Adams... it occurs to me that such intelligence would normally include GPS information, including coordinates for each location. Given such information I wouldn't expect it to be a monumental (intentional play on words here) task to send out some National Guard Hueys or Blackhawks on training missions and lob some smoke grenades into those caves or bunkers where the cartel lookouts are housed... include some gas grenades and the problem should clear itself in short order.

For a guy who supposedly cares about the citizens of his county Babeu seems to be bent on pissing off the very federal resources that can help him minimize the opportunity for a shootout. Unless, of course, Babeu has the Puroll complex.... and is wanting a shootout... real or imagined...

Rockdog48
Rockdog48

Another Einstien that thinks he has the solution to the problem. Idiot. Get out and find out for yourself what it's like trying to locate these layups. We have and it is difficult to locate these. And they change locations regularly. We would destroy one, and they would move to another. We found 4 separate layups on Big Horn Mtn. alone. And all Babeu is doing is exposing the Fed. for not doing what is should be doing.

NorthAdamsReruns
NorthAdamsReruns

TC, Babeu was elected in 2008 with his buddy Bryan Martyn, who is now on the Pinal Board of Supervisors. Martyn is a retired military combat helicopter pilot with special operations experience overseas. Use him; already on the county payroll. There was rapid military helicopter support easily provided for Pinal on the afternoon of the Puroll shooting. With a crisis like this, we have that many cartel members hiding our hills (isn't maintaining 100 mountaintop sites a lot of overhead for the drug cartels, ya' know, manpower, supplies, equipment, concealment) watching and burglarizing our residents. Babeu has them (the cartel members, not the residents) multi-tasking, some days burglarizing in Silverbell (a long way from the Vekol corridor), some days guiding the illegal drug and aliens; depends on the news day. Babeu was able to send his elite PCSO troops to special forces training preparing for his war, he ought to be able to get some smoke and gas and to borrow a helicopter out of the military. No, Paul, not your kind of smoke and gas. The real kind.
