Joe Miller, former Mohave County probation officer, was fired for publicly supporting marijuana legalization.

Right to free speech: Canceled.

At least, it is for Joe Miller, a former Mohave County probation officer who believes that marijuana should be legalized.

As the Huffington Post reports today, Miller was fired on December 10th for being one of 32 people who signed a letter by Law Enforcement Against Prohibition in support of California's Proposition 19, which would have legalized marijuana.

As the Post reports, Miller's just one of several cops nationwide who spoke out against pot prohibition and were subsequently fired.

In the War on Drugs, like other wars, truth was the first casualty.

The following is from the Huffington Post article quote in this blog post and should be required reading by all:

Scores of former officials signed a letter this fall saying that marijuana prohibition fuels more dangerous crime by enriching Mexican drug cartels who put guns on U.S. streets:

As police officers, judges, prosecutors, corrections officials and others who have labored to enforce the laws that seek to prohibit cannabis (marijuana) use, and who have witnessed the abysmal failure of this current criminalization approach, we stand together in calling for new laws that will effectively control and tax cannabis.

As criminal justice professionals, we have seen with our own eyes that keeping cannabis illegal damages public safety -- for cannabis consumers and non-consumers alike. We've also seen that prohibition sometimes has tragic consequences for the law enforcers charged with putting their lives on the line to enforce it. The only groups that benefit from continuing to keep marijuana illegal are the violent gangs and cartels that control its distribution and reap immense profits from it through the black market.

The law enforcement community knows on which side their bread is buttered. Enforcement of drug laws constitutes over 75% of the activity of these agencies. Were the laws changed to decriminalize recreational drugs, as they were in the case of the recreational drug ALCOHOL, these "officers of the law" realize that they would likely be out of a job.

I have NOT ONE OUNCE OF RESPECT for the LEOs who are against decriminalizing recreational drugs as they have not one ounce of respect for the taxpayers who pay their salaries.

They can go pound sand!

I really hope Mr. Miller sues and wins big time. His employers may be laboring under the delusion that their position on the pot issue is reasonable and almost universally held. Were that the case, though, they wouldn't have to pull BS moves like this. Oh, well, Mohave County probably has enough money from asset forfeitures to cover the bill. Better that money go to paying this guy and his lawyers than to causing yet more destruction.

What a shame, the guy was just putting his opinion out there. It doesn't mean he deserved to be fired. I wonder how the rest of his work history was?

It's one thing to encourage people to break the law, it's another thing entirely to support changing the law. Should we fire everyone who voted for the medical pot law in Arizona? Of course not, it is our right and even our duty to speak out, on either side of the issue.

Well everybody's losing their freedom of speech in this country. So big brother whether they are local, state or national will control your freedom if possible. People need to start speaking up against this!!!

Yeah, where's the Tea Party "Patriots" when ya need em huh!

They're probably down at the legislature trying to get the government to track all pregnancies to term to make sure some woman doesn't excersize her freedom of privacy.

It's not about other people and their causes... This about "We the People" standing up and stepping up. As stated in the comment above yours.... We the People need to stand up, march and flat out tell these wasteful, disrespectful and personal agenda achieving politicians that this land is our land. The offices in which they hold are only on borrow and the fact is... We need to start taking the public offices back sooner than deadline times or reelection times!!! Recalls, impeachments and so on for those who are REALLY FUCKING UP!!
