Gabrielle Giffords and Jared Loughner: A Contrast in Yearbooks

The school careers of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Jared Lee Loughner couldn't be more different.

Both are from Tucson. The similarities end there.

Long before she set foot on Capitol Hill, Gabrielle Giffords was paving her way to a life in politics. She graduated from the prestigious University High School in Tucson, then attended Scripps College in Claremont, California, where the above photos were taken. She made the dean's list three semesters in a row and won a slew of academic awards, including a much-coveted  Fulbright Scholarship to study Old Colony Mennonites in Northern Mexico.

Jared Lee Loughner barely made his high school yearbook.

Above are the faces of Loughner over the course of his career at Mountain View High in Tucson. He played the saxophone in his high school band his freshman and sophomore years, and school mate Caitie Parker said he had plenty of friends up until an alcohol poisoning experience in 2006 which seems to have contributed to his departure from school.

In the past few days, only a few photos of Loughner have circulated. A photo taken by Pima County sheriff's deputies following his arrest will likely be the image most remember.

P.s. by you & your fellow citizens allowing your govt &/or state to commit murder via euthanasia to execute prison inmates, then you all have blood on your hands as well. Also, if you are quoting your bible, must you remember your god commands forgiveness & to love thy brothers & thy sisters..as well as thy neighbor. Just some fyi.

For the rest of you who appear to be uneducated (yes, also known as illiterate), you really need to stop being hypocritical about Jared. If you don't truly know him, if you don't truly know about psychological illness, if you don't truly know what Jared has been through or anything else...you should not be so quick to judge. You're hands are not clean either. For those who like to quote their bible & say "An eye for an eye", are you forgetting that "Thou shall not kill" goes for EVERYONE & lying, stealing & murdering are all in the same category in your bible...a sin is a sin. Besides, I believe Ghandi has it correct, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

First of all, Jared is a sweet person. Second, will you media/journalist morons get your stories straight?! Make up your mind. One time you all say he got alcohol poisoning in '06 then dropped out of HS, then you morons post photos of him during his "freshman, Sophmore & Junior" years. WTFE. Those who have a brain don't believe your bs. How about you people try telling THE TRUTH for once!

Ir seems the simple message here is "Gabrielle Giffords is a winner; Jared Lee Loughner is a loser." Such simplicity is misleading because it doesn't tell all the truth. If he did have an alcohol poisoning experience in 2006 that may have made him even more vulnerable to the emotional trauma he had went he and his girlfriend broke up, which would have further quickened the arrival of the paranoid schoziphrenia. His family life didn't sound all that great, either. Although I've read that schizophrenia doesn't run in most families and can be caused by other factors, genetics do play a role, and I'm willing to bet that somewhere in Loughner's family tree there may be a forebear or two who had this disease or something like it.

The above demonstrates a lot more than is included in the text. Notice the way he's less able to manage a smile in later photos, her's is a life a privlidge and happiness. His is one of sprialling doubt, culminating in a pretty typical teenager incident, which then completely ostracises him from the school community and his friends. Its unfair to make comparisons, its completely irrelevant and only serves to further illustrate the tragedy.

I must agree with the Sheriff in Tucson. Every since I moved by family here there have been nothing but nonesense! I miss the days were we all got a long. Where life was simple. This state has the most racist people and from what I understand this guy loved to read Hitler books and such. Gifford is jewish...sounds much like the hispanic vs Brewer and pearce..so sad and I must move out when I am more financially stable.

What exactly are we supposed to take away from this? That the unpopular kids are dangerous?

Sounds like he was an illegal drug user - his drug of choice: Alcohol. You see he was underage (18) at the time of the incident involving the overdose and therefore was engaging in the use of an illegal substance - Alcohol - which at that time WAS illegal, either to sell to him (blame the Alcohol pusher for that) or for him to be using.

It appears, from the news reports (which can't always be trusted - as the reporter of this article is well aware), that this is the incident which triggered Mr. Loughner's mental illness and subsequent violent outbursts.

We all should take this information and apply it to our understanding and further communication regarding Mr. Loughner. It may turn out that Mr. Loughner had a physical illness caused by damage to his brain from the overdose of Alcohol he experienced in 2006.

If this is the case, certainly our politician's decision to inadequately fund mental health treatment in this State are a problem in need of a solution. Almost every mental health practioner, scholar, advocate and certainly the patients in need of help, know of this situation - the lack of funding for mental health treatment. It has been widely written about for many years and Judges have even made decisions that because of the poor quality of mental health facilities and funding that people with mental health issues are better off on the streets than in our State's mental institutions or jail.

Despite the impression our media give us with the massive coverate of this issue, this latest horror is not the only instance of the State of Arizona failing its citizens in deciding not to fund mental health properly with the result being a violent outburst by a person who, in any other state, would have been recognized and treated for their illness. This type of violence visited upon our citizens by people who should be getting treatment for their mental illness occurs daily in our State.

The minimum reaction to this situation by our State Legislature and our overnor should be to require law enforcment personnel to report any instance of a violent crime to a mental health reporting database so we can get clear statistics on the need for increased mental health funding in this State. I'm guessing that over 50% of the violent crime in our community comes as a result of people who need mental health treatment not being able to afford that treatment and acting out.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's more prudent to head off a disaster beforehand than to deal with it after it occurs. The proverb has been traced back to 'De Legibus' (c. 1240) by English Jurist Henry De Bracton (d. 1268).

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. George Santayana

Judge Roll, Gabrielle Giffords and Jared Loughner are a result of the above because our Republican controlled (for over 40 years now) State Government are ignorant and do not wish to learn from history.

What would you imagine the cost of trying, incarcerating and killing Mr. Loughner to be? $30 million? What do you think the mental health budget for the State of Arizona is? If a fraction of the cost to prosecute, incarcerate and clean up the messes caused by our community's mentally ill were spent to identify and treat them, a large part of our budget crises in this State would be solved.

This is what we need to learn from this incident.

Report on the unknown, not the obvious that is being posted at a thousand new outlets all over the world. We know she is a beautiful woman and him; not so much!!!

Please don't assume things about a person (ex: racism) by the books he reads. I have read books on Hitler (amoung many other subjects), does that make me racist? No. I have friends of different races & one of which I consider my brother. One more thing, if you are referencing "Sheriff" Dupnik, that man has some serious issues with an apparent uncontrolled mouth that tends to be full of hate & prejudice. I personally would not want to take anything he says into much consideration. Just my thoughts & opinions.

Jared is a beautiful person as well, inside & out. The only ugliness you see is your own hate.
