Representative Vic Williams Responds to New Times Critique of "Don't Tread on Me" License Plate Bill

Representative Vic Williams calls his "Don't Tread on Me" license plate bill a "technical placeholder."
Since our previous post about a bill proposed in the Arizona State Legislature that would amend the law regarding specialized license plates to include a "Don't Tread on Me" plate, one of the bill's sponsors got back to us and offered his explanation of some of the language used in the bill.

Representative Vic Williams tells New Times this is his first attempt at license plate legislation, but the language in the bill is vague for a reason.

"This is a specialized plate in search of a sponsor," he says. "We understand that we may have to go back and change some things."

He's referring to language in the bill saying that "any entity" can purchase the rights to design and collect the annual fee for the plate. Williams describes the vague bill as being a "technical placeholder."

Despite the current connection between the "Don't Tread on Me" mantra and the Tea Party movement, Williams says it isn't specific to any political party. In fact, it took some prying to get Williams to admit there even was a connection between the slogan and the movement.

He says the reason he introduced the bill is because he'd received several requests from his constituents to do so. He maintains, people shouldn't equate the slogan to the Tea Party.

We suggested in our prior post that an "anti-gun" group sponsoring the plate and then donating the annual fee to groups promoting tougher restrictions on guns would be sweet irony given the Tea Party connection. Williams, however, says the group he envisions to sponsor the plate would have "some connectivity" to what "Don't Tread on Me" stands for.

If that's Williams' desire, we know a group that seems to fit the bill: the Tea Party.

I hope some Spanish radio or television station purchases these proceeds. As a US Army Veteran I find it despicable that our great country itself does not understand this relic and assumes it is for hate mongers, it is like wanting English the official language what is next white skin tone with blond hair and the official looks,,,, UM speaking of Fascism..

How about we not pass any legislation that is incomplete and contains 'placeholders'?

We actually pay these people, you know, it's not too much to ask for a certain level of professional competence.

There will be a lot of cars with key strokes and in need of paint jobs. The Don't tread on me plates aren't that bad of an idea if you got the extra bucs for an Earl Scheib for your truck.. You might be paying more for car insurance if the insurance companies find out your affiliation with those plates.

So the state slides into fiscal collapse and thousands are losing jobs and homes, and this pinche moron on the goverment dime can think of nothing better to focus on than political messages on license plates.

For this alone, he deserves a world-class, home run, kick in the crotch.

The tea party idiots are the only people that are going to drive this country into a third world.

Representative Vic Williams = lying douchebag, thereby making him the perfect Tea Party shill.

Founded on the lie that it was a grassroots organization when in truth it was heavily funded by rich conservative media moguls, the Tea Party quickly distinguished itself by using lies about Obama's nationality, tax increases on the middle class and death panels (among other demonstratively false claims) to enrage a gullible undereducated class of voters.

Not satisfied with lying about living politicians, it then started telling lies about the dead ones, specifically our Founding Fathers. That the Founding Fathers in no way envisioned a nation such as the one desired by Tea Party wingnuts presented no problem for the astroturf movement, they simply made up ones that did.

Within the past several days on the PNT discussion pages several of these bogus quotes have appeared, and the defense when called out for lying is always the same: but others have used that quote.

With that level of intellectual diligence it should come as no surprise people such as Representative Vic Williams feel they can lie, lie some more, and lie just one last time whenever they so choose.

[licks tip of pencil, writes down "protest new license plate" next to no. 2098 on 'to do list' - said list containing campaigns to get rid of "Amateur Radio" plate, "Choose Life" plate, "Character Education" plate, "Honorary Foreign Consul" plate, "Masonic Fraternity" plate ...] Source: http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/vehic...

A more appropriate plate would read "Please don't shoot me."

Bullshit. Pure and simple. He can dance around the mulberry bush with all his political rhetoric but the bottom line is he wants a Tea Party license plate so all the goobers in Arizona can brag about their lack of intellect. I thought the intent of specialized plates was to produce revenue for non-profits that actually do good for humans. I don't see the Tea Party fitting that description. It's very likely pearce is behind this in one form or another... Let's not be surprised when it all comes out that he is.
