One of Jared Loughner's Family's Mystery Spokesmen Former New Times Editor

When the parents of Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old suspect in Saturday's shooting rampage in Tucson, issued their first statement since the incident, they did so via-a short statement given to the media by two men who refused to identify themselves to the media. New Times has discovered that one of those men is a former editor of this newspaper.

As identified by several of New Times' elder staffers, the man in the photo to the left is former New Times editor Jeremy Voas, who now works for the Federal Public Defender's Office.

This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy.

There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish that there were, so we can make you feel better. We don't understand why this happened.

It may not make any difference. But we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday. We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.

As you can see, the statement doesn't offer too much information. Because we now know the statement was delivered -- and likely prepared -- by federal defense lawyers, it seems it's likely part of the positioning of Loughner's attorney, which may be the reason such little information is offered.

Love ya Jeremy but dang, I can hear the wheels spinning already about this shooter's "mental retardation". Etc. And etc. And a little more etc. The anti death penalty crew is lining up to use this shooter to further their agenda...while torturing the already tortured surviving family members in the process. For the family members' sake (at least), I hope he does not get the death penalty. Simply for the fact that they will be able to get on with healing and not being dragged back in to the system for years upon years. My opinion is that the DP is the preferred sentence in AZ in terms of assistance. Those killers on Death Row receive far more public assistance than Loughner's family has ever received for whatever mental issues he may have had. I feel confident in making that assertion.
