National Rifle Association Gave Gabrielle Giffords a 'C' During 2010 Election

According to the National Rifle Association's list of grades and endorsements for Arizona's Congressional delegation, Gabrielle Giffords earned a 'C' for her stance on gun rights.

The list, reserved for NRA members only, was obtained today by New Times from an NRA representative.

For each election, the NRA's Political Victory Fund posts its endorsements for politicians based on a grading system. Of the current group of U.S. representatives, only Raúl Grijalva -- who (like Giffords) has been the subject of threats -- ranked lower than the congresswoman who is currently fighting for her life.

See below for the NRA's grades for the winners of their respective districts (candidates who didn't receive grades did not return the NRA questionnaire, says the NRA spokesman):

District 1: Paul Gosar (Republican) A
District 2: Trent Franks (Republican) A
District 3: Ben Quayle (Republican) A
District 4: Ed Pastor (Democrat) None
District 5: David Schweikert (Republican) A
District 6: Jeff Flake (Republican) A
District 7: Raúl Grijalva (Democrat) F
District 8: Gabrielle Giffords (Democrat) C

Runners-up of their respective districts and their grades:

District 1: Ann Kirkpatrick (Democrat) A
District 2: John Thrasher (Democrat) B
District 3: Jon Hulburd (Democrat) None
District 4: Janet Contreras (Republican) None
District 5: Harry Mitchell (Democrat) C
District 6: Rebecca Schneider (Democrat) C
District 7: Ruth McClung (Republican) B
District 8: Jesse Kelly (Republican) None

The NRA is a non-profit arm of the weapons industry. They misuse their tax-exempt status to actively lobby on political issues in violation of our laws. They lie about safe and sensible gun regulations proposed to make our communities safer and encourage their members to lie to the media as well. There are no "anti-gun" groups operating in the United States - that's the truth. There are a number of gun safety groups advocating constitutional laws which will "regulate" our gun-owning militia members (any citizen who owns a gun should be considered a member of that communities' "militia" and could be called to serve).

I am a gun rights advocate but also understand the need to have a "well regulated" militia. The wide-open gun ownership laws which Arizona has presently allowed the person to walk in and purchase his weapon with no questions asked. A background check should be required in all cases of a weapon's purchase so that dangerous people are not allowed to possess dangerous weapons. At present weapons can be purchased with no background check at all.

Don't allow these dishonrable anti-constitutional liars at the NRA fool you - they care nothing about gun rights other than the profits those rights generate for the weapons industry.

Get involved to help close the gun show loophole and reduce gun violence!

You certainly have a lot of opinions and probably look great up on that soap box of yours. Militia, my ass. Any militias that do exist are infiltrated immediately. I'd think that the FBI knows all about every militia member in this country. This isn't the 1700's and militias serve no purpose except for people to go play army on weekends. What do think they'd do if confronted by a professionally trained army? They would die. If you want to talk about anti-constitutional liars don't forget to mention every member of Congress and the media. I agree that the NRA sells out all thegun owners by playing the good guy while actually working to take our rights away.
