Governor Jan Brewer Signs Medicaid Waiver Request Bill. Nearly 300,000 Could be Removed From Program

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer this morning signed a bill that gives her the authority to request a waiver from the federal government that would temporarily remove nearly 300,000 of the state's neediest people from the Medicaid program.

The governor's plan would remove about 280,000 low-income adults from the program, saving the state more than $500 million.

The $540 million that the program is expected to save would take a big chunk out of the state's projected $1.1 billion budget shortfall this year -- all while eliminating vital services for some of the state's neediest residents.

"As I have previously stated, the growth in Arizona Medicaid spending is a key driver of our state's current budget crisis," Brewer says in a statement. "Medicaid's explosive growth, nearing almost 65 percent over the past four years, despite ongoing attempts to stem its increases, is simply unsustainable and threatens to consume the core functions of state government."

Click here to read this week's New Times feature outlining how some of the other cuts Brewer's proposing -- specifically in regard to mental health -- will affect health services in Arizona.

"I am mindful of the very real impacts these reductions will have," Brewer continues, "but given our state's current fiscal situation and the solutions enacted to date, I truly believe this is Arizona's only option to restore our fiscal stability."

The governor says her request will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services by next week. Additionally, Brewer says she plans to meet with DHHS Director Kathleen Sebelius in coming weeks to discuss the waiver.

And this is why we need educated people in office, not individuals that pander to the lowest common denominator during elections only to turn around and screw those same folks.Mrs. Brewer, upon filing taxes, I've discovered I owe you money.. I will not make it easy for you to collect.

maybe the governor should see the "new" scam on these young mothers having more than 1,3 4 or more kids so that thry could stay in the system of public aide foodstamps, welfare, medical care. thats a way of not working but yet enjoying the easy life!!!! when i had my children my personal health insurance wouldnt cover epidurals . but these girls do get them at no cost to them , no pain it is very easy to keep on "popping them out" i say limit the amount of children they will get public support for and makr thrm pay for the rest on their own....

Lets see. . . Probably anti-abortion, anti-sex-education in schools for teens, and against low cost birth control at community health clinics? Have you registered to be a foster parent?

Give it up folks, the regressives who put the cryptkeeper in office are too stupid to realize the consequences of what the GOOBERnor and uber-senator Pearce are doing.

So the death panelists want to put us into a death spiral.

They know the costs will get picked up elsewhere. They just want to be able to say that they did not raise taxes. Like Pearce said, cut education and let the communities increase their school taxes. That way Pearce did not promote a tax increase.

The money we "save" and the money we won't receive from the federal government equals about $2Billion. I would like to hear an explanation of how taking $2Billion out of our economy is going to generate jobs and increase revenue for the state. Oh....And this would take $2Billion out next year, also.

Get ready for a HUGE increase in your insurance premium as the costs for 300,000 people going to the EMERGENCY ROOM for treatment will hit this State hard if the State if the Federal Government allows the request for waiver. The people who pay for health insurance will find their premiums increasing exponentially as the ER costs for those people get absorbed into the medical system.

This is a "targeted" tax increase because the cost for the treatement of over 300,000 new ER patients will be borne by the people who purchase health insurance.
