Gabrielle Giffords Shooting: Second Suspect Sought by Authorities

jaredloughneryearbook.jpg
Jared Loughner (above) may have had an accomplice in this morning's shooting rampage that left six people dead.
Law enforcement officials investigating this morning's shooting rampage in Tucson just wrapped up a press conference and say they have reason to believe there could be a second suspect in the shooting that left six dead and several -- including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords -- seriously injured.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik told reporters law enforcement officials have photos of the potential second suspect -- a white male in his 50s -- in the case. He would not go into further detail, other than to say authorities are looking for the suspect.

Dupnik also confirmed what's been speculated for much of the day: Federal Judge John Roll is dead.

Roll, appointed to the federal bench by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, was merely stopping by the event when the shooting took place.

"Unfortunately, [Roll] was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Dupnik says. "He was one of the finest human beings I've ever met in my life."

Dupnik says Roll had gone to mass this morning and, as he would often do when Congresswoman Giffords would hold her "Congress on the Corner" events, he stopped by to say hello.

Nineteen people were shot by suspect Jared Loughner. Six of those people, including Roll and a 9-year-old girl, have died. Several more are in serious or critical condition -- including Giffords.

Giffords suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The bullet went "right through the brain," according to Pete Rhee, director of the University Medical Center. Giffords, he says, is out of surgery and in critical condition.

"I'm as optimistic as I can be in this situation," Rhee says.

Dupnik characterized Loughner as unstable, but not insane.

As we reported earlier, Loughner's political rants pushed the boundaries of bizarre.

Dupnik says Loughner's strange political leanings could have been fueled by the views of extremist political activists who "inflame" emotions.

"[Arizona has] become a Mecca for prejudice and bigotry," he says. "That may be free speech, but it's not without consequence."

The fact that people have dies and commenters on this story are so numb to that, is disturbing. Lets have a political discussiion(if you can call it a discussion) over the victims and their families? A 9 year old girl and others are killed and the first thing people here and other websites, feel they need to do is puke out bile. Shame on you.

Jas Wats:

"Well she wasn't very liberal from what I have heard. Maybe he considered her a traitor for not being full on communist. Either way, I don't think you have to worry about peaceful potsmokers being blamed. It seems it has already been decided it's Palin's fault. "

She supported healthcare, the DREAM Act, the repeal of DADT, wasn't extremely vocal but didn't care for SB1070, was pro environment, voted for the stimulus bill. However she voted against bailing out GM and cash for clunkers. So, obviously, some liberal was so upset by those last two items they decided to take action? That makes absolutely no sense.

However, if you want to play that game, here office was broken into right after the healthcare vote and Palin did paint a target over her district. She herself also commented on the rhetoric taking place specifically in this state that was alarming.

But which is more likely? Come on, stop being ignorant. Let's wait and see what the final verdict on this is, I have no idea, we are all guessing what the motive for this guy was but there's no reason to go through life lying to yourself and expect others to believe you too. Stop the madness.

Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right,...you are all living up to the Pima County Sheriff's words

There is a story from of all places, Fox News that got their hands on an internal DHS memo stating that the guy might have been associated with American Renaissance (right wing, bad people). They are against immigration for anyone not white and they don't care for jewish people. Too early to really tell:

This could just be a preliminary report that turns out after further review to be false.

I wonder why this dumbshit needed an accomplice to help him?

Marcy:This asshole won't spend the rest of his life in prison being someone's bitch. They are going to strap this guy to an execution gurney faster than a bolt of lightning hitting the ground.

You better hope and pray to God for forgiveness,

Time for a reality check here, People.

This is not about Democrat or Republican. It isn't about left or right. It isn't about politics per se.

If you read his postings on Myspace you will see a young man who was isolated, asked people why they don't respond, and lived on the fringe. He was anti-government and anti-religion and was rejected by the military. Friends from high school defined him as a left wing pot head, but also said that he had become reclusive and isolated.

This was not about politics. It was a young man who saw himself disappearing from life while no one noticed him who wanted to BE KNOWN. He most likely targeted Giffords not because of her political activities but because of opportunity. His goal was most likely to be infamous and the way to do that was to murder a lot of people, including a well known politician.

If his goal had been to kill Giffords - period - why did he shoot more than a dozen others after shooting her? No, this is not about politics...I'd bet the bankroll on that. It's about wanting someone (everyone) to take notice.

I don't see this (so far) as the cause of the right and it's laughable to even suggest the left (@Calln_BS your little list there is incredibly incomplete and intellectually dishonest).

I do hope this opens up a conversation about inappropriate hate speech. Who knows, maybe the guy took the term "2nd amendment remedies" seriously. What else could that have meant? You don't hear that sort of rhetoric from the left. You don't find leaders on the left rubbing elbows with the likes of neo-nazi groups as Sheriff Arpaio and Russell Pierce have.

There is something changing about this state and it's not for the better, we need grown ups for leaders and it's something that is severely lacking in Arizona.

As I said on one of the many other boards, it appears this guy is neither left nor right, nor is he north, south, east or west. He seems to be a looney who is spinning in rapid circles. Reading his rants, you can't even really figure out what it is he is so pissed off about. He does seem to have an issue with illiteracy, and somewhere I read that he had "encountered" Giffords at some point in the past and thought she was "stupid and unintelligent", so maybe his "motive" was to rid us of someone he percieved to be "illiterate". Bottom line is: he's a whack job.

Still, it is a VERY VALID topic to discuss the effects of violent rhetoric and metaphores and their impact during this devisive political climate. While there has not been any connection made between Jared Loughner and Sarah Palin's website depicting sniper crosshairs on Giffords, does this not serve as a loud and clear warning that using terms like "don't retreat - reload" and "take aim at this particular politician" can and will have dire consequences when embraced by an imbalnced individual? Maybe Sarah is not to blame for THIS tradgedy, but is she not delivering a subliminal message that may trigger another?

I believe they referred to a person of interest in the news conference. Apparently he got a ride and was dropped off at the shopping center this morning according to tapes,by a man in his fifties. His father? This nut is the lone shooter, I will bet.

Pure and Simple, this is the doing of a whackjob. It didn't matter what the reasons are that drove him to commit this horrible act, If it wasn't "illiterate people" and "unconstitutional government" it would have been something else.

He's a nutcase and is solely to blame for his actions.

Interesting, I don't remember the sheriff being the one to discover there is a huge problem causing a divide in this country, he merely pointed it out.

Can you blame this senseless act on politics? Too early to tell. But I can't think of a better time for everyone to tone it down a little.

Yes he is solely to blame for his deed But this still should be an important wake up call to the country and not ignore the fact that words are powerful/as in campaign words. There has to be a stop to using terms like "lock and load", aim or take out a candidate, no need for that. Palin was extremelyunresponsible for posting that crosshairs map.

LOL, I love it. You people are total lefty lunatics. The guy's a friggin' "lefty pothead", and the reason he's violent? "The right drove him to it!"

Really, you can't make up this s..., no one would believe such stupidity in a million years.

Bad_Mojo

Joking? No.

The reality is that Bill Ayers did his time, he's simply not a threat to anyone anymore. Just as G. Gordon Liddy isn't either, they are both hasbeens. The only difference is one of them was given his own radio show to demonstrate how unapologetic he is. Fancy that.

Rev. Wright? Why do people continue to give this guy that much credit?

Nevermind that Obama has never furthered any agenda from either one of them, His biggest problem is that he's an ineffectual moderate when it comes to the big ticket items. He's not a terrorist, he's not looking for reparations, he's not screwing over the white man, get over it already.

Jas is again demonstrating what a nut-job he is. He bought into the lies of the right and is now indignant that others didn't.

By either exagerating a select few quotes from a lifetime of great work (Wright) or by conflating at best tenious relationships with a few people he hates, he hopes to justify the deliberate lies and willfull hate put out by the far-right.

Pathetic.

Does anyone else find it odd that a "potsmoker leftist" shot a DEMOCRAT? One of the only ones in AZ. If he was such an extreme leftist wouldn't he have gone after a Republican? There is more to this story but we will only hear the "official" story which is going to serve to make the left and true peaceful potsmokers look like crazy left wing nuts. Too many things in this story do not add up.

Other than your desire to avoid responsibility for the actions of the right, what proof do you have that this guy is from the left? All indications are that he is from the right -- and that he bought into all the lies from the right.

Seriously, what proof do you have?

@Calln_BS...you're right...lefties are known for loving guns, associating with white supremacist groups and read books like mein kampf.

The coward Calin_BS refuses to think critically. He's associated himself with a party founded on the demonstratively false claim that Obama was raising taxes (when in truth all but the very richest got tax cuts) and now he wants us to listen to him.

No way. We've examined your lies and found you to be a fraud.

That you would excuse the right-wing assasination of Democratics because you claim some guy got his finger bit in a fight that he caused demonstrates your absolute failure of logic.

The Tea Party has done everything it can to cause people to hate and distrust Democrats, and now wants to evade personal responsibility for the foreseeable consequences of its hate.

You want to be a lap-dog in a astroturf movement that hurts America, well, that's your right. You will, however, excuse those of us who can think for ourselves, can respect the rights of others, and who refrain from telling lies.

Calln
Calln

Yes there is a reason for it because each time this happen they blame the Tea Party or the right before that. Nobody ever walks those accusations back and examines them honestly. We're not playing that game anymore.

We will be the front line of stopping the lefts dangerous lies.It about time blame starts landing on the shoulders of people responsible. The instantly points fingers at the Tea Party and has lied insidiously about them over and over again. The days of going unchallenged are over.

This was a terrible tragedy for all involved, the very fact that many are trying to paint the right as responsible means we have to respond.

We've tried taking the higher road and leaving these baseless accusations unchallenged. This has led to many believing these inane lies which at first seem trivial but over time have built up into a mountain of falsehoods that people can't imagine to even question at this point.

We've been seeing a lot of violence out of the left lately:

Lefty who shot up the school board meeting.

http://www.theblaze.com/storie...

Lefty environmental nut who tried to blow up the Discovery building because of the dirty humans that were breeding.

http://www.people.com/people/a...

Lefty who bit the finger off of someone he disagreed with at a rally

http://www.ktla.com/news/landi...

Or Kenneth Gladney who got beat up at a Tea Party rally and put in the hospital by SEIU thugs.

Jas Wats can't stand that he has been called out for his lies and for his efforts to provide cover for the acts of his right wing brethern.

If Jas did not intend to give cover and to excuse the assasination of democrats, then what, praytell, was the point of his post wherein he referenced acts of the left as being what lead to the right-wing response?

People like Jas like to throw bombs, but then pretend they had nothing to do with them when the explode.

He's the lying member of a lying political party which was founded for the express purpose of telling lies - and like a school yard bully HE JUST CAN"T STAND IT WHEN PEOPLE FIGHT BACK!

Jas Wats
Jas Wats

Thanks for proving my point. Where did anyone condone assassinating anyone in this thread? You claim I am lying while you lie right out in the open. You probably do it so much you don't even realize it. Only a coward runs around casting blame every time something bad happens. Do you "it's Bush's fault" much? Did I at any point say any speech or art should not be allowed? No, stifling free speech by labeling everyone you disagree with as a racist or a hatemonger is your domain. You used to be able to get away with it because when conservatives talk about actions that we may disagree with you simply call names. Well screw you, liar. Who here excused this shooting? No one. Why don't you leave, liar.

Guest

In other words, Jas Wats has nothing. No proof, just "a girl on the Internet said he used to be a liberal."

Jas then goes on to try to justify the concerted, organized lies of a party founded on a lie by listing a handful of non-violent statements of a few.

Specifically decietful is his whining that because conservatives who argue that greed is good are being being labled as greedy it must then be okay to incite a people not to trust their government, to think the president is a foriegner, that black is white and the sky is never blue.

The Tea Party was founded by the rich to mislead the middle-class and the poor. The lie was that Obama and the Democrats were raising taxes on working families. LIE! Obama reduced taxes for all working class families and 98-percent of the nation at-large. Only if you were in the top 2-percent did you get a tax increase, and then to levels a hell of a lot lower than the Reagan era rates.

Since then it has been one lie after another - death panels, foreign control, forced abortions - and through it all was the discussion by the right-wing of needing "second-amendment solutions" to the nigger Obama problem.

You don't want to be considered racist - don't associate yourself with racist policies or people, don't come up with hairbrained, demonstratively false claims for which the only explaination is that you are covering for your instinctive hate of a black man.

Seriously, what style of absolute coward must you be to think that because some guy puts a cross in a bottle of urine you now have the right to assasinate democrats.

All that does is prove you hate free speech as much as you hate free elections.

I don't know if you are one of the guys who helps originate the Tea Party lies, of if you are just a dupe, but I do know that people like you, who will excuse the killing of people who disagree with you because your feeling were hurt are a danger to America.

Leave, you coward, just leave.

"indications are he is from the right"? What indications are that? Most indications are he is leftist! And a symbol meaning a target on a state made someone go crazy? Do you realize how idiotic you all sound? Coming from the the same people that regularly wish death upon others for simply having a different opinion than theirs? To actually have the balls to complain about crosshairs on a state, on a website about winning something?!? It's OK to make movies about killing a president and putting a major religious symbol in a jar of urine as art? It's not violence promotion when libs call conservatives evil, greedy and racist simply because conservatives want to keep more of their OWN money. But crosshairs on a website on a state is? Give me an effing break. You want proof? Just had to not be blind or deaf for the last twenty years to know you are full of crap.
