Tempe Girl Escapes Would-Be Abduction; Cops Need Help Finding Suspect

Categories: News
The Tempe Police Department is looking for a guy who tried to kidnap an 11-year-old girl this morning. He failed, and now police need your help finding him.

Police say the girl was riding her bike to Fees Middle School near Baseline Road and Lakeshore Drive just before 7 a.m. today, when she was approached by an unidentified man.

The man got out of his car and grabbed the girl's arm but she fought him off and was able to get away -- unfortunately, so did the suspect.

The girl managed to run to a nearby Wendy's, where she called her parents.

Now, police need your help tracking down the suspect.

The suspect is described as an unshaven, white male with glasses and black, wavy hair. He is about 5-foot-8 and was wearing green, plaid shorts and a gray tee-shirt at the time of the attempted abduction.

The description of the suspect's car might be a bit more helpful.

The suspect was driving a small red shiny 4-door car with a spoiler, shiny spoke wheels and dark tinted windows.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.

Police: Girl made up abduction attempt storyStoryCommentsUpdated: 3:58 pm, Wed Nov 3, 2010. Michelle Reese, Tribune

Tempe police say an 11-year-old girl who reported an attempted abduction Wednesday morning admitted later she made up the story.

"There was no attempted abduction and no crime was established," Sergeant Steve Carbajal said. "The Tempe Police Department takes these reports very seriously and investigates them accordingly."

The Tempe Elementary School District did not send letters home to families because of the new information from police, spokeswoman Monica Allread said.

The girl originally told police she fought off a man about 7 a.m. Wednesday who attempted to grab her in the area near Lakeshore and Baseline roads as she rode her bike to Fees Middle School.

I hope they find this guy. Thanks for the story.

On Monday next to my house near University and Priest a man in a white car with a black stripe on the sides made contact with my 9 yr old son. I called the police and they came out and took a report. Not my son nor the officer or myself have ever seen this car in the neighborhood. The man made an interesting offer to my son and told him to have a nice day. We believe it was in attempt to perhaps gain his trust in some way.
