Proposition 203 Still Has Hope; Arizona's Medical Marijuana Measure Could Still (Maybe, Possibly) Win

Categories: Election 2010

Don't exhale just yet, because Proposition 203 could still win.

The medical marijuana measure is behind by only 6,732 votes out of 1.3 million cast, as of 9:47 a.m., the most recent update on the Arizona Secretary of State's Web site.

All but two of 2,239 voting precincts in the state have reported, but those two are in Pima County, where the medical marijuana ballot measure did well.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of early votes dropped off the polls and provisional ballots have yet to be counted.

The measure still has a fighting chance. All that has to happen is for the negative trend to shift in those uncounted votes -- just a little.

Pima County election officials still haven't gotten back to us.

The pro-pot measure passed with 57 percent of the vote in Pima County, while Maricopa rejected the measure by 51 percent. Could that make the difference when all the ballots are counted, even though Pima's overall vote totals will be smaller?

It's too early to tell.

The Tucson Weekly is reporting that as many 50,000 ballots remain uncounted in Pima County, including 25,000 early ballots dropped off at the polls and another 25,000 provisional ballots.

In Maricopa County, it's possible that as many as 100,000 early ballots were dropped off at the polls yesterday, speculates says Yvonne Reed, spokeswoman for Maricopa County Elections. Provisional ballots also need to be counted - those are the ones used when a mistake is made somehow, causing another ballot to be used.

Helen Purcell, the Maricopa County Recorder, is likely to announce the best estimate of uncounted votes later today or tomorrow, Reed says.

As with the follow-up to August's primary election, we'll be obtaining numbers throughout the day from Matthew Benson, the spokesman for the Secretary of State's office, as more votes come in and get counted.

This race is so close, it may be a few days before a final outcome is determined.

Cannabis is a valuable medical herb, and has been recognized as such since long before the Anglos arrived here. It is a remedio. Here in rural northern New Mexico, it is fairly common practice for the elders to bathe in a tea of it to take away the pain of chronic arthritis.

While tragic deaths due to DUI are common, when was the last time you heard of someone driving the wrong way on a freeway and killing somebody because they had smoked a joint? Despite widespread use of the herb, it just doesn't happen.

Pot can be harmful or helpful depending on how it's used. What is harmful is encouraging cartels and gangs to proliferate, while imprisoning folks for growing/possessing/ingesting pot. It is harmful to ignore the fact that Cannabis sativa and cannabis indica have been used by humans safely/successfully for millennia. It is also harmful to act as if God/nature made a mistake is creating a plant that has highly nutritious seeds, pleasantly intoxicating buds, and sturdy fiber.

Support the black market! Vote no with the drug dealers! Keep the multi-billion dollar industry in the hands of the cartel. Sounds like a fantastic plan.Whether or not marijuana has any medical use is irrelevant in this debate considering tobacco and alcohol have absolutely no medical value and are proven to directly CAUSE deaths, but are still legal to use with their "pleasurable" effects. Can anyone who voted no explain why two harmful substances with pleasurable effects are kept legal while another "harmful" substance, with possible health benefits, is illegal? Also, substances such as salvia extract, an extremely powerful hallucinogen with the potential to be stronger than acid (LSD), are still legal.

Well....... If this doesn't pass the people of Arizona have spoken...... They will have now sided with the Mexican Cartels and the underground marijuana business. Now all that CA marijuana from the Emerald Triangle and the tons of Mexican Marijuana moving through the border tunnels will flow like water........ Hope you all picked the right side............Good job folks...........

Medical maraijuana must pass! I have suffered chronic back pain and major depression for the last twenty years and smoked for twenty years and it helps alot. Depression pills causes too many side effect very uncomfortable.MJ are harmless drug! Alcohol and tobacco kills thousands of people every year! MJ zero! MJ makes me feel more active and eat more and has calm effect. The people who are against it are idiots they don`t know what they are talking about! Let them have it in order to live! So legilize it!

Can someone please explain to me how a medical marijuana initiative has passed two times previous in AZ. and is now looking as though it will not?? All these years later? Should it not be easier? Is it the way the law was spelled out this time? ie; workplace protection, rental protection and driving protection. ( I mean the metabolites, not being under the influence whilst driving) Is that what may be the death blow to 203? WTF! We continue to go backwards!!

I just heard an ugly rumor. The essence of it is that allegedly, provisional ballots are routinely thrown in the circular file / memory hole. That is, they are given to placate people and never get counted. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

As a Crohn's Disease patient, I can tell you first hand how marijuana is a MIRACLE drug.

In June of this year I was hospitalized due to malnutrition from the horrible side effects of the 19 pills a day I was prescribed. After 2 weeks in the hospital, and no relief, the doctors gave up. Told me they didn't know what to do for me. I was unable to eat or keep even water down. At 96lbs (I am 5 foot 9) I sat there ready to say goodbye to my two children.

I decided to refuse further treatment and left, preparing myself to die at home.

The day I came home, my father told me to try smoking pot. Being a parent, and a law abiding citizen, I refused. He broke down, sobbing, begging me to just try it once.

That was June 26, 2010.

I just weighed myself this morning. I am up to 125lbs and have been feeling better than I have in YEARS!! I now take ZERO prescription medications and am able to live a semi-normal life.

So to those of you who voted against 203, or who don't feel that it's a valid form of medication...you obviously have never suffered. Shame on you for denying my the RIGHT to LIVE!

This is not a good day for Arizona. The money it would have brought in and the sick people are the ones that are the real losers. Shame on the people that cannot think outside the box. We had a real chance to shut down the Mexican Drug Cartel. We just have to sit back and hope the remaining ballots will be in favor. People do not look at the good it would do, they just live in the past.

To the people who voted against 203. I pray that you or a loved one suffers from a unbearably painful cancer. I hope that you or they suffer. That there is no relief from the pain or nausea. Hope that you or loved one lingers for months. That is what the people who voted against medical marijuana need to happen to them.

I have aggressive remitting MS and am 35 yr old male. I have been put on several pain medications to relieve the pain. I will not take any more pain killers they not only kill the pain but they kill you. Weed as they call it helps 100% more then any other meds I have received call it what you want but it would help so many people in need and now we are back to Pain management Centers. They are the ones killing people not WEED.

Journey
Journey

All the people that post on here about having medical need of marijuana!Where were you? I wrote letters, I talked to people, I tried to get help from AMMPP, I made signs and put them up, frankly I needed a little help! I know people that supported this and didn't even bother to vote because they assumed it would pass, "how could people fall for these ridiculous lies" is what they said about the oppositions rhetoric and bogus claims. Now here we are! If you care about something YOU have to lift a finger! We are up against a billion dollar industry: prohibition! They will not just let us have our freedom back when they profit from holding it for ransom! I was to young to vote when Nixon and Reagan were steering us towards the disaster this is today, so I didn't get us into this mess. Lately I feel like I've been fighting a 3 headed dragon by myself to get us out!

If this comes to a recount, who will actually take ten minutes away from their precious social networking to write letter demanding a recount! We are talking about 0.2% now and it will likely be less when all the votes are counted, the error margin is greater than that and who would the errors likely favor?! Despite the media bias, despite the unethical political interference, despite the current hostile political environment, despite the distractions of race, fear, and foreclosure, I still feel we did win this! I know we should have won it, dishonesty and disinformation were the ONLY tools of the opposition!

Why Not?
Why Not?

I smoke it. Why deny it. but, seriously, I have anxiety and when I go home after work ismoke it. It is just like someone going home and drinking a beer to relax. I do the same, only with MJ.

does anyone know if we won or lost yet?I just looked up the votes on the Arizona election results saying we lost :(by like 6,869.I hope there are more ballots or i demand a recount.i had to watch my grandfather suffer for 6 weeks-even with hard drugs, until it finally took him.

I was in an accident a couple years ago and sustained major spine injuries and am in constant pain and have daily spinal headaches. Marijuana is the only thing that will relieve my headaches when they get really bad. To all of you RETARDS out there that voted against prop 203, god help you if you are even in my situation or many others out there that use this "drug." But then again you probably didn't have enough intelligence to see life through other peoples eyes. I would so much rather smoke and deal with very little side effects than be on all the meds that I am on that have warnings from death, liver failure, suicide, hair loss, joint deterioration, etc..........

I am in shock that the fear mongering and chicken little routine bumped this to being close little alone the possibility of losing! Millions of Arizonans are literally sheep! If this was about legalization then I could understand it being close and divided, but compassion for sick and dying people?! Oh wait they lied and tried to make it into a legalization issue, people seriously believed that crap? Truth is stranger than fiction!

When the fat lady sings I hope truth and justice prevail! I know which way it will sway if a recount happens too! Dishonesty has been the ONLY selling point for those opposed to this natural medicine! There should be mandatory sentencing for tampering with votes!

Our elected officials have been bought and paid for by corporations (which includes pharmaceutical companies). Now, with the Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, these giant multi-national corporations can spend vast amounts on any given political race without any kind of disclosure. Just think what the legalization of medical marijuana would mean to the giant pharma companies. I wonder how much it took to buy John McCain and Jon Kyl.

The Arizona Cardinals donated $100,000 to defeat this proposition. Don't you love it? The taxpayers of Arizona build them a beautiful new stadium so they can host the Super Bowl and the Bidwells can make even MORE money...and what do they do with the extra money we taxpayers provided for them? They used it to screw the people who need this medication to lead a healthy, happy life. I say boycott the Cardinals. Let them know why.

I completely agree about these Pain Management Centers. Though I get benefit from pain pills and will be on them for the rest of my life. I know the benefits of MJ very well, with Medical MJ I could control my tolerance at the lowest level to maintain the least amount of pain med I have to intake. Making myself healthier through this journey of life. I pity the fools that vote against this. We all end up HURTING at some time of our lives. The choice of a healthier, better life or a surf (slave) and criminal designed by government lies & propaganda. Ron Paul for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives & Presidential leader for 2012...

My dad has MS as well, and I'm so, so sorry. Medical marijuana truly is the only thing that helps. Other medications like muscle relaxants and pain killers will help ease the symptoms, but the toll that it takes on your mental state is unbearable, especially for work.

Anyways, does anyone know if the author of this article will be posting anymore updates? I checked online and 100% of the precincts have submitted their votes. However, I'm not sure if the early votes have been counted. Would that still be classified under the same precinct as the votes from yesterday?Just wondering.

Thanks

Marijuana isn't a "drug" like Heroin, Meth, PCP, etc.... It's NOT a drug at all. It's a plant. How can something natural like that with no worse effects on your body than alcohol or cigs be illegal??? It's rediculous. People like you are the reason this race is so close, while the SMART people voted yes. Then you look at the fact that right now a 10 year old boy can go to any corner and buy a sack. If it was legal, it would be regulated like alcohol (which 10 years olds can't buy) and much harder to get. Plus the supply would increase so the demand to the illegal drug dealers would decrease meaning LESS CRIME. You republicans need to get a clue.

There is a legitimate need for this! Try having a destroyed back and nerve pain that is only helped by one thing, marijuana. That being said, most people will not use it correctly and there will be many people who get MJ cards that do not deserve them. Complete legalization and taxation is the only logical answer, it is nobodies business what people put into there own bodies, especially not the government! I think God is laughing at your ignorance right now for praying for such a thing.

first of all medical marijuana isn't addictive that's a common misconception. and there are people out there that seriously need it. people with m.s. cant stop shaking until they have it in their system. it helps them live a normal life like everyone else. how would you feel if you had M.S. and shook back and forth but your government and ignorant people like you said ooh it's bad you cant have it because our kids will get a hold of it. that is BS if your kid wants some weed they will get it from some kid at school. these clinics are gonna be on lock down for patients in serious need. your kid will never get a hold of these medical buds. your kid will buy it illegally from some local drug dealer or some school kid.

And you obviously haven't looked into the benefits themselves thoroughly. I don't smoke (any more), but I do know the benefits. For instance, it can slow the spread of cancer cells. I also know that when I was in excruciating pain due to bursting ovarian cysts, which could not even be helped by morphine or ibuprofin, the only thing that helped was THC.

Do your research before you jump to conclusions. I must say, I do believe that strict enforcements should be taken (such as a diagnosis by a physician, along with several other failed methods of treatment on file) unlike in California. When enforcements aren't made, people abuse the privilege. But there are medical benefits to it, as well as possible job opportunities if this passes.

I would find out which of our elected officials backed this proposition (if any had the cajones to do so) and call and ask them to demand a recount. I think you can also petition the Attorney Generals office. In some instances there are laws that insure a recount if the vote is extremely close. I'm not sure if that applies to Propositions or not. These are all questions that need answers. Who spearheaded this Prop? They're the people to contact about this I would think.

finally a smart one. It SHOULD be completely legal. People think that just because it is legal, everyone will use it. That is rediculous. Alcohol is legal and I know a lot of people that don't drink. Just as I know a lot of people that don't smoke weed. And I highly doubt they'll start just cause it's legal. Why not make money out of something that will be happening anyways instead of spending billions every year incarcerating people for simply smoking a join. Our country is turning to S@#%. Look at Amsterdam and how their crime rate dropped significantly when it became legal.

Then why are "u" people wasting your time with "medicinal" marijuana? If it is so harmless, and so helpful to everyone, then why aren't you going for full legalization? Not one of you has stuck to the point we're supposed to be arguing (and you call ME ignorant?). What you want is legalization, yet here you are making fools of yourselves claiming to be afflicted with all of these diseases that only POT can seem to address. Man, what rotten luck all of you have received. The diseases you have can only be treated by a single illegal narcotic?

I'm not ignorant. I'm just sticking to debating the ridiculous argument you've all made. You put a proposition on the ballot about one thing (medical MJ), and the moment anyone tries to debate it, you only use your arguments from the "legalization" debate (a debate we're supposedly not yet having). I'd consider THAT to be truly ignorant.

If "u" are getting straight A's, why can't you seem to spell, use punctuation and grammar correctly? The low standards of education in this state are another matter entirely, and we can debate that on another thread someday.

Stay on-point Adam. Your proposition's premise is that this specific population of people needs THIS specific compound to treat disease symptoms.

If you're point is that "Marijuana needs to be legal for all", then by all means, go gather some signatures and make THAT your point. Quiz wasting your time with obfuscation and subterfuge. Man-up and make the case that you want to make.

But no, you know you'll lose if you do that.

just to let u know i would much rather smoke pot to alleviate anxiety or depression than be addicted to a lil blue pill and have to pop one every time. i think that u r very ignorant and u need to look at the side effects of pot and then compare them to alcohol and prescription pills which are legal and kill more and more people every year. and at least if a pothead gets behind the wheel there not going to kill ne body and there still in the right state of mind alcoholics and pill heads think that there in lala land and see pretty lights. i am a great student in college straight a's and i raise my daughter by myself and have a full time job so pot is not as bad as everybody wants to make it out to be and unfortunately ur really close minded and the world will be alot better when all the close minded people find another planet to destroy.

Adam Hamilton
Adam Hamilton

of all the substances on Earth you just happened to think "Hey, if I add some yeast, sugar, hops, etc to this barrel right here and let it ferment for a little while, then drink it, maybe I can get drunk?" Come on Botanybay, use your head. Pot is a natural, unprocessed plant. Alcohol is a created substance. Morphine and other pain pills are manufactured. Most of the "legal" drugs from a pharmacy in 5 years will have class action lawsuits because of side-effects that they find in a few years. Pot has been smoked for 1,000's of years with not even 1 reported death. It's impossible to OD on it unlike prescription meds and alcohol. Tobacco is the #1 killer in the world and LEGAL. hmmmm sounds to me like something isn't right here.

botanybay
botanybay

I'm far from ignorant. I just find it really interesting that suddenly, all these people have this incredible need for a single "medical drug" that also happens to be the most popular (illegal) recreational narcotic. An incredible irony, don't you think? What's ignorant about noticing that?

I'd have more respect for you folks if you had the huevos to pitch for what you really wanted. You want to smoke pot openly and freely. Instead, when you finally win your "medical pot" tactic (I'm smart enough to know it'll happen someday), you'll all be going through the ridiculous charade of finding pot-friendly doctors and engaging in the theatrical farce of being "sick".

Meanwhile, those of us that are emotionally healthy enough to calla duck a "duck" will stand by and feel sorry for those of you that will go through such elaborate means to do drugs. The pot-friendly docs are all salivating at the prospect of making you pay dearly for the prescription.

And for the few hundred of you that truly are sick, you know damn well that being sick just sucks, and there isn't always a solution. You're either too lazy to research viable alternatives or you are just grasping for hope. Trust me, marijuana is not the narcotic that provides hope for anyone.
