Prop 203 Recap: From Distant Hope to Victory; Final Numbers Show Measure Won

Categories: Election 2010

The passage of Proposition 203 will go down as one of the most memorable elections in state history.

The final numbers are in, and Arizona's medical marijuana has won by 4, 341 votes. There's no turning back. The Maricopa County elections department, in a bulletin sent moments ago, reports that Monday's update will be "minimal."

Just three days ago, the measure appeared to be riding an unstoppable wave to defeat. This historic election was a nail-biter of epic proportions for observers on both sides. On Election Day, November 2, the measure looked to have been narrowly defeated. Numerous blog sites and a few reputable media outlets, like the Phoenix Business Journal, called the race for the "no" side.

Days went by in which the measure hung in there, but didn't seem to be gathering enough steam to pull off a win. A new trend developed in the last couple of days of counting provisional ballots and then, in the Friday's evening vote count, the measure bounced from losing by 700 to winning by about 4,400.

An apparent miracle, to supporters. To opponents -- sorcery.

"...Arizona's medical marijuana has won..." I am not against the medical use of marijuana but there are those who would abuse this for sure and will end up in front of my desk. I hate to generalize but in areas where there have been legalization, the number of addicts have risen as well.

If you want to improve your health, natural forms are always safe. The herbs used to treat many disorders without serious side effects. You can find several herbal supplements online and purchase any of them, according to their needs. It is marketed for sale in tincture, tablets and capsules and can choose any of them, to suit your needs.

Loosecannonsbluesband..... yeah the thing is, people who use cannabis because its helpful to them could really care less about whether or not their smoking stands for being "against the system". I think were mostly relieved that this is a step toward Sheriff Joe NOT breaking into our houses at 2am with a swat team, killing our dogs, taking our posessions for themselves, and sending us to jail, having a judge rule against us because we have no politcal backing. All because some 50 year old PD officer decides he wants to ruin someones day over an eighth of weed. Its ok though, I laugh when those officers get older and go through kemo and curse the fact that there is no alternative to the pharma drugs they give you for the pain.

Your "pot" counterculture is false - it's created by the laws prohibiting the drug. If you liked Woodstock, you will NOT like legalization of marjiuana. Woodstock could not have happened EXCEPT for the prohibition against a simple weed-like plant. Be prepared to have the re-entry into mainstream society of thousands of deadheads who will suddenly realize that their reality has changed to being accepted in the normal, everyday, existence of average Americans - POT IS NOW NORML - what do we do now?

I'm very glad to see Prop 203 has passed. Personally as a self-designated care-giver, I've seen the benefits of medicinal cannabis use. A friend of mine has degenerative disc disease and takes a variety of pain medications to manage the pain. When he smokes a small pinch of cannabis in the evening after work, the amount of the legal pain medication he has to take drops in half.

This man is not a typical '420-stoner' but a professional man who's worked hard, paid his taxes and votes in every election. There many, many more like him in the 'cannabis closet' that are waiting to come out. Prop 203 is intended for those people and others who have actual medical need, like oncology patients receiving chemotherapy or the terminally ill. For many of these people, cannabis is the option of last resort because of the stigma of being a law breaker when they are anything but--even the supporters have moral issues.

For this patient, Prop 203 works on many levels:

1. Dependence on possibly addictive opiate-based narcotics is lessened.2. The prescriptions purchased last longer.3. The added pain relief of cannabis is natural, no added side effects.4. The quality of life goes up dramatically, improving physiological and mental health.

To see how cannabis was originally used in the medical community, all one has to do is go to Google Books, type in 'cannabis' and look for the medicial journals and guides that were published around 1900-1910. Cannabis tinctures were used to cure many different ailments with great success.

Perhaps Arizona will be an sterling example of intelligent and compassionate use of cannabis. I know that there are many people in the state who are ready to rise to the challenge. I love Arizona and the greater Phoenix community. Whether you are a supporter or a detractor of Prop 203, we're all still neighbors and human beings.

I have no problem with pot smokers. It's every other kind of drug user I have a problem with.

Which im hoping marijuana may help with my large list of problems prescription drugs couldn't fix. NEVER take cymbalta that stuff is horrid, im surprised the government hasn't started dumping that into our water supply, turns you into a zombie. Seriously.

rayven

Cymbalta is the WORST thing on the market. I was on it for 4 months for Depression and Anxiety. The side effects were horrible, then I researched it and found out its chemical components is the same as Meth. I went to an Herbalist and am now on medicinal herbs that are all natural with no side effects and have never felt better. My medical doctor was so impressed with my improvement he is now recommending herbal treatments for his other patients. I'm currently in school for Herbalism and on my way to become a Naturopathic Doctor. Don't let the FDA pump you full of chemicals that cause more harm than good.

Bug mistake. Marijuani, medical or otherwise, is a gateway to harder drugs.

"Bug" mistake? "Marijuani" ? Not only are you clearly misinformed but your level of intelligence would clearly indicate that education has never been your priority.

rayven

I'm so sick of that tired excuse. I know a ton of people who smoke weed and you know what they HATE all the other drugs out there. Most of the people who do the harder drugs don't smoke marijuana because they want the "speed-like" high from coke and meth and you don't get that with pot. They don't like feeling relaxed, they like being hopped up. I was married to an abusive, meth and coke addicted husband and he never smoked weed.

This is completely mute. Even if it was true, it wouldn't matter. This is about personal freedom. Just because you want to live in a nanny state where the government tells you how to live your life and what you can and cannot do with your own body doesn't mean the rest of us want to. Go back to yelling at kids to get off your lawn, grandpa.

this "gateway" idea has been disproven time and time again.if you want real education on the matter, you can find most of the 15,00+ clinical studies through the freedom of information act home page.tobacco, which does kill, and alcohol, also kills, are the real "gateway drugs"nobody has ever died from overdose of cannabis, nor from any illness related to cannabis, which are none except for bronchitis.education is a hell of a drug!

The disappointment I felt on Nov. 4 was the deepest ever since I moved here 26 years ago. So many instances of narrow-minded bigotry and "I've got mine and I don't want you to have anything" occurrences through those years that I witnessed from our elected officials, crude and rude law enforcement personnel, and mean-spirited senior citizens, all seemed to culminate in yet another trampling of human rights vote.

To see it turn around over the last week and to have proposition 203 passed is one small step for mankind in our state, Arizona. I hope the fear mongering political hacks like Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio won't attempt to further their own personal fortunes with an attempt at circumventing this vote and pander to their selfish and bigoted supporters.
