Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu Seeks "Wenches" as Part of Proposed Anti-Drug-Smuggling Unit

Categories: News

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has become ubiquitous in recent months, especially in the aftermath of his deputy Louie Puroll's controversial shooting last April 30.

‚ÄčThe dude is everywhere, but is especially prevalent on Fox News, where his bleatings about the evils of illegal immigration -- replete with incorrect statistics -- are greeted sans any anything approaching intellectual honesty, much less any old-fashioned fact-checking.

Sheriff Babeu is going hard while the going is good -- and it may not get any better for him than it is at this moment, what with his adopted pet issue illegal immigration on the front burner.

Part of that going hard has included him recently asking the Pinal County Board of Supervisors to fund an anti-smuggling enforcement unit. (It's all still up in the air.)

On page six of Babeu's expensive proposal, he asks, among other items, for first-aid kits, binoculars, mobile data computers, and "Tahoe 4x4 patrol vehicles with wenches."

That's right,

Wenches.

Jeez, Sheriff, you really think that wenches are going to turn the tide in this thing?

We think of wenches as working girls, strumpets, as in, "The back streets were filled with wenches of all shapes and sizes."

One can only imagine how things may turn around in the remote Vekol Valley -- site of where Deputy Puroll claimed to have been shot -- if wenches, not that darned Mexican cartel, takes over the landscape.

We suspect that Sheriff Babeu meant winches, cranks or handles of revolving machines used for hoisting or hauling stuff.

Then again, these are crazy times.

You write such a nice article for someone who can't find more than a simple TYPO to complain about. DAVETHEMAN, you spelled YOU wrong LOL Nothing like THINKING you're better than someone else huh?

Unless you folks live in Sheriff Paul's county, unless you then attend the board meetings, unless you THEN visit the towns he proposes to protect and get your own "old fashioned FACTS"...by experience, rather than by joining the talking heads spewing 'statistics' your words fall on deaf ears, and make you look even more ignorant than your misspelled words and your attack on a misspelled word do. Have a great day in the Y O U call life haze.

"Xcuse" me here, but wasn't this character hired to be Sheriff of Pinal County? Does he ever actually do anything for the county, except to go in front of the board of supervisors to ask for money for harebrained schemes? I suspect that the majority of training videos watched by this fellow consisted of old John Wayne Westerns....

C'mon, JB! Have you even been reading Rubin's coverage of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office? Have you noticed that Rubin has TWICE been named Arizona's Journalist of the Year by the Arizona Press Club (http://bit.ly/an3ouW), besides winning scores of other journalism awards? How about that New Times' reporters have dominated that award and many other Arizona journalism awards? Have you developed a sense of humor that would allow you to realize that he was just writing a fun little tease piece on an acknowledged misspelling? (At least you quickly caught your misspelling.)

You can take issue with some of New Times' aggressive reporting and/or the occasional satiric stories, but NEVER question the quality of the journalism that New Times routinely exemplifies!

Maybe he does want a " wench" instead of a " winch " in every cruiser to keep the deputies happy during those long hours in the desert . I wonder what he wants in his cruiser...?

All this talk of Hummers, wenches, and closets is invigorating.

Anyone else a little warm in here?

You mean he can't even spell? Oh well thats what happens when you hide in the closet with little boys. Come on Paul why don't you go back to where yu came from, Pinal county sure can use someone who is going to work not let all your flunkies work for you. You told people you were going to have computers in all cars, now you want the tax payers to pay for them. If you can GIVE a Hummer to the COP program why didn't you put that Hummer to good use?
