Lawsuits Against Jon Hulburd Raise Questions About His "Moral Compass"

Democratic Congressional candidate Jon Hulburd
Congressional candidate Jon Hulburd has based the majority of his campaign around attacking his opponent, Ben Quayle, over his ties to The Dirty, a raunchy, Scottsdale-based gossip site, to which Quayle admits contributing a few satirical posts.

Hulburd opened his campaign by saying "this race is now between Jon Hulburd and 'Brock Landers,'" the fictional pen name Quayle used in his posts.

Hulburd's first campaign ad was even titled "Compass" alluding to one of Quayle's writings that claimed his "moral compass" was so broken he could "barely find the parking lot."

We're pretty sure there's a saying somewhere about glass houses.

Based on two lawsuits filed against the candidate, it seems Hulburd's "moral compass" could use some recalibrating, too.

According to court documents obtained by New Times, Hulburd was sued twice in 1999. Once for -- among other things -- slander, and once for defamation.

In the slander case, it was alleged that Hulburd intentionally tried to hurt the business of one of his competitors in the Mexican pottery import game by relaying an inaccurate letter to his competitor's customers. The letter said the competitor's company, Interclay L.L.C., was a "defunct" company. The only problem with that was the company was not "defunct" -- it was just in competition with Hulburd.

The suggestion that the company was no longer in existence damaged business, one of the plaintiffs in the case, Matt Frazier, tells New Times.

Frazier says the case was ultimately dismissed because competition with Chinese import companies made it impossible to compete in the Mexican pottery import business and he could no longer pay for a lawyer.

He says he's never met Hulburd and has since moved past it. In fact, he tells New Times he had no idea Hulburd was running for Congress and had never heard of his opponent -- or his famous last name.

In another lawsuit against Hulburd -- this time including his wife and several members of the Paradise Valley Country Club -- he was sued for defamation after rumors were spread that a club employee and a member of the club were involved in a lesbian relationship.

In other words, someone started a rumor that these two women were lesbians and Hulburd -- and his wife -- were accused of being some of the club members who spread it.

The judge in the case ruled in favor of Hulburd because the statute of limitations in the case had run out. The plaintiff was ordered to pay him $882, according to court documents.

After several emails -- and faxing a copy of the slander lawsuit to the campaign -- Hulburd's camp has not responded to our request for comment.

Below is a campaign ad from the Hulburd campaign, in which his wife claims she was outraged by Quayle's involvement with The Dirty. She calls it "wrong and immature" -- again, we're pretty sure we've heard something somewhere about stones and glass houses.

In Hulburd's fraud case, he bankrupted the company he committed fraud against. They dropped the lawsuit because the no longer could afford to combat rich-Hulburd. Rich guys can bully poor guys like this all the time.

In Hulburds defamation case, rich-Hulburd bullied the woman into not suing. Men, especially rich men, do this to female victims of assault all the time. Women not pressing charges in time is a major problem in America. By the time they got the courage to sue rich-Hulburd the statue of limitations had run.

Hulburd is a FRAUD, BULLY and an ELITIST!!!

The suits were dropped. Does that prove anything? I don't know.

I will say that most people I know have never had a lawsuit brought against them. Dropped or not at the very least this guy was pissing people off.

What's really sad though is that the only commercial I've ever seen from this guy has been the anti-dirty one. It's as if he can't stand on his own merit and instead deflects to Quayle's past stupid actions. Sad.

As for me, it really doesn't matter as I live one mile from their district and I'm stuck with Ed "I looke like a beaver" Pastor as my "representative."

Hulburd hates women and gays. He defrauds Arizona businesses. He hasn't worked in a decade because his wife is a billionaire. He'll vote for Nancy Pelosi.....loser!!

Please help me understand what allegations in a lawsuit prove.

What's the difference between Hulburd and some hobo who lives in the projects?

Nothing - they both collect welfare, one from the government and the other from his wife. Likely they are both liberals.

Man, the comment sections are getting pretty weak lately. I miss School Marm. At least she had something intelligent to say and used proper grammar.

Two old, old unsuccessful lawsuits seem like awfully thin gruel.

I used to be a Democrat but am now an Independent. Both parties are flawed. All I care about is one simple question: who will fight liberal Nancy Pelosi?

Quayle has my vote. That simple.

This is a lame post, King. I love how you first gloss over Quayle's ties to the website, saying he's admitted to posting a few "satirical" comments on the site, a line he frequently uses. Nevermind his shifting answers on this issue and his frequent memory loss when it comes to his relationship with the site. Anyhow, that's more humorous than anything. What's really lame is you wrote about two unsuccessful lawsuits! One of them actually awarded Hulburd attorney's fees. Damn, buddy, that's huge! You sort of suck. And you're smug about it.

James,

One lawsuit was dismissed and the other was ruled in Hulbard's favor. Any dipshit can file a lawsuit. What is the point you are trying to make? That Hulbard won two lawsuits against him 12 years ago?

"Trish" and "Louis" clearly work for the Quayle campaign.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the entirety of this article is spent summing up two unsuccessful lawsuits filed against Jon Hulburd. I understand that New Times is trying to find a "juicy" link to drive readers to the site but this is kind of stretching it. Its hard to call Hulburd a fraudster and gossip rat when he successfully won both lawsuits that accused him of such. It seems to me that would point to him NOT being a fraudster or gossip-rat but then again, its not like the American court system knows what its talking about. I mean its either you have no faith in the justice system to award a fair decision where its deserved and you will still consider Jon whatever it is you are calling him regardless of the courts decision. Or you believe in the court system but will still hold on to whatever personal grudge you have against Jon. Some people in this district are just poorly informed i guess.

Hulburd is nothing more than a welfare-queen living off his wife's dole. No wonder he's a liberal.

So wait, let me get this straight about Hulburd: he wants to make "experience" and "morality" his campaign theme? So, regarding "experience" his experience is defrauding an Arizona business only to eventually see his own business fail? And since then he has been living off his wife's inherited fortune? That's "experience"?? Sounds like it should be called "freeloading."

And regarding "morality" this guy insults and spread vicious lies about women just because they are gay? Sounds like that should be called "lying."

Sounds like Hulburds real campaign themes should be: "liar", "fraudster" and "freeloader"...along of course with "LIBERAL"

What's this people keep talking about Hulburd and pictures from out-of-town "trips" with the Thunderbirds? Sounds interesting!

In Hulburd that same loser who is just living off his wife's inherited money...the one who hasn't had a job in a decade? Now we realize he's also a fraudster and a gossip-rat? Typical liberal.

This liberal is the ultimate hypocrite. Throws stones in glass houses.

Thank goodness he won't join his idol Nancy Pelosi in the big house!

Hulburd is a fraud!! Defames woman, defrauds Arizona businesses?

Hulburd is a sexist, racist and elist!

I can't wait to vote for Jon Hulburd! Ben Quayle is a frat boy. He's also an idiot. Hulburd will be great for our district. I'll take a conservative democrat over Quayle any day.

Chad, I understand that. I could probably sue you right now for infliction of emotional distress. Hopefully I'd lose. I get how lawsuits work. But I have a letter sitting on my desk from Jon Hulburd to customers of his competitor's business saying the competitor's company was defunct. The company was not defunct, as confirmed by the plaintiffs in the case. I'm not saying he was guilty of slander, I'm saying don't start talking about a "moral compass" when you send dishonest letters to the customers of your competitors.

Wrong. In the business fraud suit rich-Hulburd forced his competitor out-of-business. The competitor was forced to drop the suit because he could no longer afford an attorney. Rich guys do this to poor guys all the time, sadly.

The defamation suit for hurting a woman was dropped only on a technicality...the statue of limitations had run, which oftens happens when woman are afraid to bring cases like these forward, especially against well-funded defendants.

rich-Hulburd is a fraudster and a bully.

FaithHopeCharity

What does the word dismissed mean, Ben? I forgot, you were fired from Snell and Wilmer, guess we know why...

Schadenfriend

As someone familiar with the defamation suit for "hurting a woman," I can add that there were a lot more problems with the plaintiffs' cases beyond the statute of limitations. The attorney for the plaintiffs (the husband of one of the plaintiffs) being disbarred for dishonesty was certainly one of them.

Sally
Sally

...and the reason these 11-year old cases are relevant is because Jon Hulburd has not done anything the past 11 years. He has not had a job because as he told the Arizona Republic "I have family money." His wife is a billionaire through her inheritance. It is important to know how this guy will act as a congressman and so you have to look back to the days when he actually worked (and was not just a bored loafer in the inheritance business).

Kathryn
Kathryn

OJ Simpson was dismissed too. Oh yeah, he was innocent..

Hulburd put an Arizona company out of business to line his already rich pocket? His company then failed too. Pathetic.

Jenny
Jenny

I am very familiar with the case as well. Jon Hulburd defamed a woman. He bullied her into not suing. Period.
