Congressional Candidate Jon Hulburd Dumps $250k of (Ahem) His Money Into Campaign

SC Jon Hulburd
Democratic Congressional candidate Jon Hulburd has found himself smack-dab in the middle a closer-than-expected race that, according to the only poll released on the matter, has him leading his Republican opponent Ben Quayle by two points. So he's decided to dump a ton of his wife's own money into his campaign.

Hulburd reportedly has poured $250,000 of his  money into his campaign. He hasn't had a paying job in five years, so the money is probably coming from his wife's family's fortune, built on things like Scrubbing Bubbles and Drano.

Hulburd's wife, Carrie, is an heir to the SC Johnson fortune. SC Johnson is the consumer-products giant responsible for the aforementioned items and things like Windex, Glade, and several other products found in just about every home in the country.

According to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission, Hulburd now has about $100,000 more cash-on-hand than Quayle ($346,306 to Quayle's $247,717).

That's a far cry from the $1.3 million Quayle raised for the GOP primary, which he narrowly won.

Quayle's been criticized for using the Rolodex of his father (former Vice President Dan Quayle) to garner a list of high-profile donors, including former President George W. Bush, former Dallas Cowboy's quarterback Roger Staubach, and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Hulburd's now-full campaign piggybank will allow him to continue to hound Quayle over his ties to DirtyScottsdale.com, which has been the foundation of his campaign and is brought up in nearly every campaign ad he's run.

He recently released a new ad, where he says Quayle has no business running for Congress and that the only house he belongs in is a frat house. Expect to see a lot more where that came from over the next two weeks.

As we pointed out yesterday, Hulburd has yet to answer for some of his own morality issues, which include getting sued for allegedly spreading rumors that a female member of the Paradise Valley County Club was a lesbian and blatantly lying in one of his earlier campaign ads.

His campaign barks that the suit was dismissed "with prejudice," but this doesn't mean that Hulburd didn't do what the action alleged. He refuses to say one way or the other to New Times

Click here to see the five questions Jon Hulburd doesn't want you to ask. And we're not even getting into how he's abandoned Democratic Party principles (read: he's for Arizona Senate Bill 1070 and against the DREAM Act) in an attempt to appease a conservative, anti-immigrant constituency. So's Ben Quayle, but can we expect a Republican rattlesnake not to bite?

Am I the only person on the planet that doesn't hate Ben Quayle? I know what I'm gonna get with BQ. More of the same. And y'know what? With 10+% unemployment, I'd go back to Bush et al in a freaking heartbeat

I think the problem is that voters don't fully know what they are going to get with Lil Benny Boy. He will vote to preserve the old DC Guard he claims to fight once he gets to washington. Do you really think a guy who has received 30-35% of his financial contributions from Wall Street is going to serve the interests of the district before he helps out all the people who have paid to have him in their back pocket? I mean when you're receiving contributions from Haliburton (listed on this cycle's filings) and George Bush, I guess you do know what you will get. He is 33 years old, has no idea what he is getting himself into and whats worse, he has no clue how his decisions will affect the voters he claims to represent. Don't believe me? Watch this video and after watching, if you can tell me you have confidence in letting this guy make decisions for you and represent you then I guess we have different priorities. I dont appreciate all the negative ad running as much as the next guy but simply based on competence, Jon Hulburd is miles ahead of Benny Boy.

How could anyone possibly know what we're get with Ben? Sure, at this point it appears we have knowledge of his background and character (to some degree). But the guy showed no interest in politics, including voting, until he (or his dad) decided he should run for office. So, tell me how we know about Ben? Ben who? Ben why?

James, I appreciate your note response, because it completely validates what I have long suspected reading your articles. The fact that you call yourself a “reporter” is a joke. There is nothing balanced or unbiased in any of your writing. You are so in bed with the Quayle camp you must bump into them every time you turn over. If Quayle wins, maybe he'll give you a job, since I can’t imagine why this or any other decent publication would.

And by the way, not that you seem to understand this – but partners at law firms make a lot of money. Ben certainly wouldn’t, since he hasn’t lasted at any law firm long enough to even be considered partner material. Jon Hulburd was a partner at one of the most prestigious law firms in Phoenix. You frequently and conveniently forget to mention that in your “reporting.”

Oh, and Redstarfighter must not read much, because James King wrote a long story on Ben Quayle with a tater tot on the cover of New Times and a picture of the 40-year-old virgin inside. This hardly made Ben look good, you know?

Could Redsarfighter be the names of Hulburd campaign members, or Hulburd, or Hulburd's family? Apparently Jon and his staff are unable to come up with the answer to whether he called this married woman a lesbian. Why not just answer the reporter's qustion?

I understand that getting sued does not imply that the said incident did or did not happen but the Untied States court system ruled in Hulburd's favor and even ordered the plaintiff to pay Hulblurd's legal fees. Also, Jon Hulburd was not the only one named in the suit, he was one of many that successfully defended the claim. Im also pretty sure the lawyer representing the plaintiff was disbarred after the suit. Now call me crazy, but the resulting circumstances of the lawsuit point to a pretty clear cut answer about whether or not Jon ever said it is whatever people are claiming he did.

However, i would like to point out that there is no ambiguity in Quayle's past. Bought a house in the district last year, wrote for the Dirty.com, never voted in a local election and oh one more thing. Pretty scary scenario if this child ends up representing me and my family.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Somebody take all of my Windex, OFF and Glade and scrub the head of this loser great grandson in-law of mine.

I didn't bust my ass so that a few generations later some nobody could marry into my family and spend my cash. I didn't work hard so that I could finance that jerks all-attack-ad run for congress, a run for congress as a freakn' LIBERAL no less who wants to kill the same jobs I created. I didn't provide for my family and the families of my employees so some smug asshole, using my cash and influence, could bully employees at a country club because they are less fortunate than him. I set an example as a businessman and now this jackass commits business FRAUD and drives companies into bankruptcy.

SC Johnson is a family company, damnit! Get that loser out of here!!!

Wow, James, that's quite a hard-on you have for Hulburd!

Here's a question YOU should answer: Are you willing to say that Ben Quayle is the best candidate for this position?

Judging by the bullshit you keep slinging at Jonny boy, it sure seems that's how you feel.

Care to prove me wrong and write about Ben? Nah, didn't think so.

Leave the real reporting up to Stephen Lemons.

If you find a dead hooker in the trunk of Ben Quayle's car, let me know and I'll write the story. Same goes for a live boy. Frankly, I just don't give a shit that he wrote some blog posts -- that weren't even offensive -- for DirtyScottsdal four years ago. I didn't care when it came out THREE MONTHS AGO and I don't care now. So excuse me for not dwelling on it -- three months after the fact -- the way the mainstream media is. Find me something new and relevant about Quayle and I'm on board. Hulburd's made two blog posts Quayle wrote four years ago the basis of his campaign. Just look at every single one of his ads -- it's all he talks about. Never, in any of his ads, does he mention anything that a congressman actually does or an issue a congressman might actually confront. Wow, he has five kids? That's fabulous, so does OJ Simpson -- not sure what Hulburd's trying to prove there, and that's the only non-Ben-Quayle-related information Hulburd has to offer. As for your question: Perhaps if Hulburd focused on why Jon Hulburd is the right choice, and not why Ben Quayle only belongs in a frat house, I might be able to answer it.
