Phoenix Woman Beat Kitten to Death With Baseball Bat. Then Cops Found Her Crack Pipe, Police Say

A Phoenix woman was arrested Tuesday after a quick, crack-fueled game of baseball with a cat. They weren't on the same team -- the woman was at bat and the kitten was the ball.

According to court records obtained by New Times, cops got a call at 9 a.m. Tuesday about a woman who was beating a cat at 600 North 19th Avenue in Phoenix.

Cops responded to the call and found 19-year-old Serene Bass, who matched the description of the suspect provided by witnesses, at the scene.

As it turned out, Bass just happened to have a small, souvenir-type baseball bat in her front pocket. On the bat, police found blood. Cops also found what is believed to be cat blood on Bass' shoe.

Witnesses identified Bass as the woman who was beating the feline.

Police found the kitten dead from head injuries on the side of the road just north of where they found Bass.

After searching Bass, police found a used crack pipe in her front pocket.

She's been charged with a felony count of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, and a count of possession and use of drug paraphernalia.

As sick as this story sounds, it's not the worst case of kitten-related torture to hit the Valley.

Last year, a Chandler man tried to feed a kitten to a python. When the python refused to eat it, 28-year-old Jeremy Tuffly stomped the kitten to death.

He was only sentenced to three years' probation.

The sicko was dumb enough to videotape the entire thing. Check it out here.

Anon - I assume you have some evidence to back up your allegations that police "mishandled her, interogated her for hours and then took her photo" - or are you just using a deflect and insinuate tactic to try to defend your good friend Serene, or perhaps you are Serene. Yes, I can insinuate too. Doesn't mean jack shit. Your inference is bullshit. Mug shots are mug shots, and she looks like a crack head, acted like a crack head, had a pipe like a crack head - probably as crack head.

And, yes, Johnny White Man, where INDEED is Arpaio??? He by all rights ought to be ALL OVER THIS like a fly on shit.

Oh, wait! That's right! That whole big show of defense of poor helpless animals was all just hype on his part to try to ruin a man for an accident so that he could claim he was capable of saying an officer did something wrong. Not his officers, of course...

5 to life for Serene. 25 to life for Arpaio.

Mom, I was wondering what you've been doing lately. Does your parole officer know about this cat deal ? He'll be kinda pissed, won't he ?

I think beating a kitten with a baseball bat is far more barbaric and brutal than a fatal kick to the wall. But either way, where's that animal lover---Shurf APE-hole? Oh that's right, he's got a media camera jammed into his wrinkle-wrinkle. Yet, the uncivilized nativists call that "enforcing the law".

@Vdavidson Look at what you're saying. She was once a normal person. She isn't the same person she was.. But she is still my cousin, and I still love her no matter her faults. But she isn't a oxygen thief.. She is just as much as a person as you are. Just because she has made some mistakes doesn't mean you have a right to say rude things like that.

5 to life for Serene?? She is already sentenced to 'life'. A life of being lost due to her tragic upbringing with a mother who lost her battle with drugs and cancer. Serene is now alone in her world of drugs and homelessness and her lack of self worth. Yes, 'LIFE" is what she is sentenced to, through no fault of her own. I know this because I am Serene's grandmother. I've watched this young woman struggle from being a precious little girl to what she has become now, without being able to help her. I believe noone can be more devastated than are the people that love her. And there ARE those of us that do love her, regardless of her horrendous actions in this incident. My daughter, Serene's mother, is gone, but her influence on Serene remains with us, to deal with and support this poor, unfortunate child.

James King has a sick obsession with mug shots which give misleading information to the public. It looks like the police mishandled her, interrogated her for hours, then took her photo. This is part of the "easy" conviction game! No presumption of innocence.

Listen dumbass.. Her mom is no longer with us. She passed away from cancer in 2008, I know this because serene is my niece. She is a lost young lady who is messed up on drugs. The crime is horrible that she commited, however she has made her own choices. Her mother, my sister is dead. So think about how your comments may affect those of us left in the wake of all this.
