Sheriff Paul Babeu Calls New Times a "Conspiracy-Theory Newspaper." Fox 10's John Hook to the Rescue

Fox 10's John Hook
When Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu agreed to go on Fox 10 News last night to answer questions about the shooting of Deputy Louie Puroll -- raised in the current issue of New Times -- he probably thought something similar to what we thought: TV news will throw a few softballs that'll be easy to crush out of the park. That is, the slick Babeu (the new, telegenic version of Joe Arpaio) would shuck and jive his way out of answering tough questions.

This was not the case.

Babeu made a lot of claims in an interview with Fox 10's John Hook last night, including calling New Times a "conspiracy-theory newspaper." Hook was quick to our defense.

In the middle of Babeu's snide remark, Hook interrupted to say, "In New Times' defense, Sheriff Babeu, they have done some of the best journalism in this town over the years. I mean, they've broken some big, big stories."

Check out the video after the jump.

The questions raised in Paul Rubin's latest opus, "Pinalcchio," have made a lot of headlines since publication last Thursday. The story led the newscast of every local TV news outlet last night.

Meanwhile, Babeu's spent the last week defending his deputy and questioning the findings of  world-renowned forensics experts who determined Puroll's story doesn't add up.

As you can see in the video, Hook wasn't lettin' Babeu off for his criticism of the experts, either. When Babeu tried to downplay the experts' significance, Hook stepped in to remind the sheriff that "these guys are not hacks."

Babeu announced yesterday that he's reopening the investigation into the shooting and turning over the shirt Puroll was wearing at the time of the shooting to the Department of Public Safety to check for gunpowder residue -- something he should have done in the first place. He feels it will clear the deputy's name. As Rubin pointed out yesterday, that's not necessarily the case.

From Rubin's post:

There's no telling if the deputy was wearing another shirt (probably a long-sleeved, per department regulations, while patrolling in the desert) over the teeshirt when the shooting occurred,

Photos of Deputy Puroll taken after the incident show no scratches, bruises, cuts, or even dirt marks on either of his arms. Forensics experts tell us that there surely would have been some sign of minor injuries to his exposed arms based on Puroll's own account to detectives of almost constantly moving, crawling, staying low, and generally hunkering down in the Vekol Valley desert for more than an hour after calling 911.

In any event, big ups to John Hook for holding Babeu's feet to the fire.

This is off topic from the other comments but you touch film izle upon it in your post… Concerning E and J, have you considered individual therapy for them? It is really

important that they are able to process, in an emotionally healthy way, these huge life bombs that have been thrown their way. I’m glad to hear that E has a cousin he

can relate to but the great thing with therapists is that they can be completely impartial. hd film izle E and J would be

able to say anything to a therapist, things they might not want to admit to anyone within the family. Addiction is a family disease, so as great as it is to have

familial support, it is equally filmini izle important to have outside, unbiased support as well. E and J may want to check out Alateen as well, where they can meet others their

As a retired out of state law enforcement officer; I felt that this story just didn't add up. First, the timing was way too coincidental. However, not all the evidence is in just yet. Still, the sad fact of this case is that many police officers from agencies everywhere have put themselves falsely in the spotlight. Reasons ranging from stress to finances to marital problems have led to fake shootings, arrests, etc. Most of the time it doesn't mean the cop is bad it just means they need help. I would also caution everyone that I have seen first hand two forensic experts disagree on gunshot wounds. We owe it to the citizens to make sure this case is fully investigated, but we also owe it to the deputy to make sure he's innocent till proven guilty.

It is amazing to me how any time you question an "official" story, you are a conspiracy theorist, meaning you are insane and possibly aligned with some group of anarchists or, oh my god, terrorists. I was told that we as humans must always use our ability to reason out a situation, as that is why we are superior to the other inhabitants of this planet. That's fine unless you question some elected government LIAR. Then you are a nut. I would rather be a nut than be a government chump. Sheriff Babeu, go shave your head, and keep up the Skin-Head legacy: Hate 'em all, call 'em wrong. You fit the role handsomely.

It is nice when one of our local journalists actually seeks to pry open the truth. New Times has been denigrated by those that don't want the truth to come out. The reporting by several of the New Times has been focused on truth and corruption for at least two decades that I have watched. New Times have been relegated to press that is alternative media, theoretical, non-credible, and other similar designations. By whom? Arpaio, Hendershott, Lisa Allen, many of the news rooms at AzRep, Fox 10, and other peole and print, radio, and TV news rooms.

The New Times does not always get it right, but they don't get off the trail either. It is like a jigsaw puzzle. Every week or two, New Times has another piece in the puzzle for us to look at. Most fit the puzzle. Some don't. All in all, examining history, the New Times has been aggressive, honest, and relentless in nearly two decades of pursuing the ongoing corruption by Joe Arpaio and his cronies. Had I been paying attention earlier, I might have voted only once for Arpaio rather than twice. The first vote I regret. The second vote was my fault because I was believing the PR hype that our tax dollars pay for and had not looked for the con side of Arpaio.

The New Times does not have Babeu or Puroll in their sights, but rather a potential white wash of an investigation into a potentially bad shooting. Just like Arpaio, they will pursue it and follow it until the truth is known, or left unrecoverably unknown.

To me, this has nothing to do with drug smuggling, human smuggling, or illegal immigrants. It is about honesty and integrity of law enforcement. If Puroll shot himself, then we have a cop that is willing to lie to his office, lie to the public, etc. Who will trust this guy when he is testifying in court? His story should be validated or refuted to the extent possible New Times is pushing for this to happen. If Puroll is honest, that is great! If he has been dishonest, then he should be canned. Then he should be charges with false reporting and billed personally for the massive response he called in.

Thanks to John Hook for his honest and aggressive pursuit of the truth in this matter. I hope it continues and that other media follow. New Times "has did" some great reporting and continues to do so. Seeking truth with relentless zeal is journalism that I want from any news source that I pay attention to.

I still want to know why the wound is not slanted upwards if the guy was firing up at the deputy... There are a million answers for all the other questions, even the dark marks on the side of the wound, it's not necessarily powder burns, but how does a guy shooting from below you hit straight, if not slanted won a little bit?

It obviously pained Hook, who's been friendly toward Babeu in the past, to press the subject, but he acted like a real journalist.

But let's keep things in perspective. The following night, the Fox News Channel (yet again) gave Babeu a national platform (on Greta Van Susteren's show) to pose as an authority on border security & the Mexican drug war, which he is not. The unfortunate realities of his conduct of his office went unmentioned. National Republican party managers have decided that Babeu is the future of Arizona politics, and there's not a lot mere Arizonans can do about it.

I've Had Enough
I've Had Enough

Whitewash already under way. Babeu has admitted his deputy tool had the standard departmental long- sleeved shirt . . . "wrapped around his waist" (think out-in-public "ass wrap" style) and, even tho' Babeu admits this long-sleeved shirt had "blood on it", the long-sleeved shirt WON'T be tested . . . Hence, don't be surprised when the short-sleeved undershirts Tee comes back negative for gun powder and lead or copper microscopic residue. And this guy is in charge of investigating Arpaio ? ? ?

Mrs. C and I watched the interview with Babeu. I was impressed that John Hook didn't let Babeu get away with his trash talking about PNT.

Babeu is insistent that everything is just peachy and there really is no need for further investigation. I found it interesting that Babeu chose to verbally impeach the expert from New York, based on being from afar and not having examined the shirt or the deputy.

I will ask once again, and perhaps you can get some answers Mr. King:

(1) What experience with internal investigations, if any, did the sergeant have before being assigned to this very critical incident?

(2) Why wasn't an impartial agency, such as DPS, asked to conduct the internal investigation and then given carte blanche access to all evidence and witnesses?

(3) Other than the 'smoking gun' tee shirt, what evidence or statements are going to be validated?

(4) Who are these 'independent' witnesses Babeu referred to?

(5) Why was this investigation conducted apparently to clear the deputy, instead of finding fact and validating all information before drawing a conclusion and 'closing' the case?

(6) What progress, if any, has been made on the criminal investigation that should have been in process at the same time as the internal investigation.

(7) Why wasn't any other agency brought in to review the police shooting, as is normal with professional law enforcement agencies?

(8) Why would Babeu allow Puroll and his attorney to 'control' the questioning of the shooting scene?

I don't know anything about Pinal County S.O. and it's policies and procedures. Unfortunately, I'm afraid most folks are in the same boat.

It certainly appears Babeu is playing copycat of MCSO at Pinal County.

Not a good thing.

An Associate has sent an Email s/he received from a person alleging to be in Florence, Arizona, Babeu's jurisdiction. Is it Babeu himself? The Associate also said that they're joking about Hook. Here goes,

"We don't have any problem with THE CHEAP VAN BUREN HOOK(ER), aka John Hook, but we feel that he should do some more research. Hopefully he'll see this if you post it in New Times. A colleague from FLORENCE, AZ, Babeu's base of operations, sent it, but we don't know if it's from the PCSO or Babeu.

Here it is:

(E-mail starts off with really obscene insults and obscenities about New Times and James King, King's mother, King having sex with horses, etc.)

Then s/he writes,

"This webpage has a link to a GOOD download of "The Creature from Jekyll Island." Go to http://current.com/news/893056... , then follow the link near the top of the page to download the audio book.. The download takes quite some time, but it's worth it - a high quality ".zip" MP3 file which you can extract and play using the free WINAMP MP3 player, also downloadable from many sites." "

Really bizarre stuff, but the speaker is pretty reasonable and cool. it makes sense - we recommend at least downloading it and listening.

Babeu was elected as Sheriff and thats what he should have been doing when his deputy alleges he was shot at in the desert. If Babeu was doing his job he could have and should have investigated the shooting fully and avoided all these questions and the embarassment to the county.

Go to 5:20 of the video, Babeu seems to be more interested in "the integrity of the Sheriff" that finding out the TRUTH.

He says he wants to give Sheriff Joe "a true sense of whats going on" in his department.

The above sentence tells a story, Babeu is already posturing his investigation to make it look like Arpaio had no idea what was going on.

CAN YOU SAY WHITEWASH?

Just like the shirt & the investigation of Puroll should have been turned over to DPS, the MCSO investigation should also

It is sure funny how if it is a "Conspiracy Theory Newspaper" he has to reopen the investigation in an attempt to prove Deputy Puroll's case. Seems the Pinal County Sheriffs Office is the one with the credibility issue here.

Some Associates told us that New Times is being labeled as some type of New World Order tool. One wrote,

"Oh yeah...Oh yeah...It looks like PAUL BABEU suspects that New Times, The Fat Fucktard, and the rest are evidence of The New World Order conspiracy. It's their losing attempt at dictatorial control of our free media, perfected by NWO proponent CARLOS SLIM in Mexico. Slim has now wormed his way into the New York Times, with Lemons getting some press in the Grey Lady in recent years.

The good news is that they're being defeated now on all fronts as we re-take America and return it to what The Founding Fathers intended it to be.

We don't know yet whether Lemons should be held criminally culpable and be locked up. He's definitely been bribed and paid off with money, dope, or other perks."

Man, these Associates claim that our mainstay Stephen Lemons might face prison time, or even Guantanamo Bay, when this is all over. Even most who don't like him don't really want to see The Bird locked up, because they say he wouldn't last too long in "The Joint," as they call it. Sounds like they actually feel sorry for our fat friend.

Babeu SLIPPED UP in this interview. At the end he says that the investigation will give Joe Arpaio a first hand look at what is going on within his agency. Like he doesn't already KNOW what has transpired?

Babeu obviously is poised to whitewash this entire thing.

There would have been a conspiracy if multiple drug runners attacked one deputy. When one deputy makes up a story, where is the conspiracy? (At least, until others start helping him cover it up.)

Kudos to John Hook, I definately agree to it that he deserves some praise for this stint. With this interview, he may have raise the bar for what we always regard as FAUX Noise Network, that usually sides with folks like arpaio and other wing-nut demagogic thugs. This came as a shocker frrom some the news agency itself. For that,,,thanks to John Hook for throwing some punches to get to the truth, that the public deserves.

I think Babeu feels a debt of gratitude for this deputy, as he was so obviously trying to bring attention to the insecure border. Babeu got some nationwide press for this, and he wants to protect his loyal minion. Sounds a lot like another Sheriff we know.

It's odd, the Fox Network seems to be an entirely different entity than their Faux News counterpart, there's alot of programming that most definitely pisses off the conservatives, and they actually WILL ask questions of the Right. I don't mind Fox as a network, just not a news network.
