It Was 113 Degrees in Los Angeles Today and People Freaked Out; How's it Feel, Wimps?

Anyone living in the city of angels got a little taste of Phoenix today, as temperatures hovered around 110 degrees for most of the day.

Most people living in Los Angeles are novices when it comes to hellacious, oppressive, unfair heat. So, as you might expect, everyone freaked out.

The top headline on the Los Angeles Times' Web site today was "Record Breaking Heat Staggers L.A."

Rookies -- in Phoenix, there are certain points in the summer when if the temperature hits 110, the headline would more likely be "Cold Front Settles Over the Valley."

At it's hottest point, Los Angeles warmed to 113 degrees, breaking the record of 112 degrees set in 1990. Los Angeles has been keeping heat records since 1877.

The heat prompted the Los Angeles Unified School District to cancel all outdoor activities, and the city is urging people to use Parks and Recreation facilities, senior centers, and libraries as cooling centers.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat wave is the result of "a ridge of high pressure over the West that was keeping the Pacific Ocean's normal moist and cool influence at bay."

Welcome to our world, Los Angeles. But don't worry -- to quote anyone who's ever discussed Phoenix's weather: "it's a dry heat."

I like it here when it’s hot because the weaklings move to others cities and overpopulate them… Hooray for heat. The more people you have, the more asphalt, the more buildings the more heat… That was hard. And duh we are in a valley which means we are surrounded by mountains - can’t beat LA off...

what a dumb picture to post with the article... just saying.

I think it's fair to point out that in LA, because it is generally much more temperate, there is a greater number of people who do not have air conditioning in their houses than in PHX. I have lived in Phoenix for many years, and I came out here for school, but this was unbearable as a college student with no A/C. Not to mention, that because LA doesn't have the same desert climate as PHX where it cools off at night, the temperature stayed in the 90's in the evenings.

I wish more people would realize that this is more than a penis contest of who has it hotter. It's really a health issue, and it's important to realize that without A/C there are thousands of individuals who were at risk of serious dehydration and heat stroke. There are two deaths being investigated regarding the heat wave, and several were hospitalized. Also, the heat wave brought about power outages that left over 30,000 without power.

I'm not saying that the weather in LA is terrible, because it's usually paradise compared to anywhere else in the country, but I just want to point out that there are serious implications of the heat that aren't discussed here that are important. We're talking possibly 2 lives and thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Phoenix doesn't "cool off at nights". I lived many years in Phx, and I saw multiple times where it never got below 100 degrees. Officially, this has even happened 1 or 2 times. Now that Phoenix is the world's largest \urban heat island, it's even worse. Storms hardly make it to the center of the valley any more, unless another storm or two has already knocked down the heat factor, they break up, go in a circle around Phx and join up again on the other side. I've seen it on the radar animations. Crazy stuff.

Forget the heat.Arizona has Brewer,Pierce,Sheriff Joe and now bone head Sheriff Paul. That is reason enough for Arizonan´s to keep their sand trap.Anybody who will support those idiots and spend millions in damage control, caused by those fools can have Arizona.

i just do not understand why news stations get the weather wrong, ONE day before the actual reading of weather? It is so annoying!

But then again...you live in Arizona. So you lose in the overall battle. Sorry.

I've lived in Phoenix, and now live in LA. Today is much, much, much worse than any day I remember in Phoenix. As long as we're making fun of the behavior of people who are suddenly confronted with a weather situation not typical for their chosen locale, let's talk about how funny it is to see someone from Phoenix attempt to drive in the rain...

Ok LA, you guys are whimps. Come talk to us in August when it's 113+ with monsoon moisture, which means 50%-60% humidity. Also, I was in Boston for 4th of July when it was 100 degrees and 85% humidity. You guys would have evaporated in those temps. Plus it was was 113 with 25% humidity, which meant it felt like only maybe a 107, wind chill!

This heat was anything but dry. The humidity got up to 25% and beyond. I was dripping all day. But hey, send the senior citizens and children outside so they don't look like wimps. I purposefully chose not to live in Phoenix because it's Vegas (where I grew up in the dry heat) without the freedom. Enjoy your boring city while you make fun of us wimps.
