J.D. Hayworth Would Lose to Rodney Glassman in General Election, Latest Rasmussen Poll Finds

A few short months ago, the U.S. Senate seat that's up for grabs in this year's election seemed almost certain to go to a Republican. The only question seemed to be which Republican it would be -- J.D. Hayworth or John McCain.

Things have changed, though, most notably for Hayworth following publicity that he received over his former gig as a infomercial pitchman pimping "free government money."

Now, it seems, should Hayworth win the Republican primary, he's not a shoo-in to win the general election -- in fact, he's projected to lose to the current Democratic front-runner Rodney Glassman, according to the latest Rasmussen poll.

The poll, released today, shows that if Hayworth were to square off with Glassman in the general election he would lose 43 percent to 38 percent.

The poll also asked respondents how favorably they viewed each candidate. Hayworth didn't do so hot in that department, either.

According to the poll, 40 percent of respondents view Hayworth "very unfavorably."

McCain, on the other hand, would clobber Glassman by almost 20 points, if the election were held today.

In a head-to-head race, the poll shows McCain leading Glassman 53 percent to 34 percent.
