Arizona Diamondbacks Show Gumption in Rare Comeback Road Win Over Milwaukee Brewers

Categories: Sports
The Arizona Diamondbacks repeatedly have flopped on the road this season, proving time and again the old adage attributed to Yogi Berra that a game ain't over until it's over.

But last night's game in Milwaukee against the Brewers didn't fit the ongoing narrative.

First of all, Arizona scratched out a run in the ninth inning to tie the game at 4-4 -- on a couple of costly walks, a great sacrifice bunt by the scrappy Augie Ojeda, and a run-scoring grounder by Gerardo Parra.

Then, in the 10th, the D-Backs put up a three-spot on veteran relief pitcher Trevor Hoffman, with the big blow coming on a two-run single up the middle by Stephen Drew.

Hoffman has 597 career saves, and though he's at the tail-end of what will be a Hall of Fame career, the guy still has his moments as a world-class stopper

Not last night.

The D-Backs carried a 7-4 lead into the last of the 10th, but as everyone who follows the team knows, no lead is safe with this year's bunch.

Milwaukee loaded the bases with just one out on three consecutive singles off Aaron Heilman. But the right-hander induced a fly- and ground-outs without further damage, and earned the save.

Footnote to game: What happened to Arizona starter Ian Kennedy's control?

The dude nailed three Brewers in the early innings, and none of the hit-by-pitches seemed in the least intentional.

Milwaukee starter Chris Narveson later threw behind Rusty Ryal in a show of solidarity, but the game didn't turn into a beanball war probably because it looked like Kennedy just couldn't find the plate half the time.

Happens even to major-leaguers.

The three-game series of the two also-rans continues in Milwaukee tonight (5 p.m. our time), with coverage on KSAZ-TV and 620-KTAR. For more information, go to www.diamondbacks.com.
