Tempe police today released video footage of the biker who was hit and killed by a car over the weekend. It's pretty graphic.

The worst part is the driver of the car just took off after hitting the victim, and now police want your help in tracking down the person behind the wheel.

Check out the video after the jump.

The victim's been identified as 32-year-old Jason Scott, of Mesa.

Tempe Police Sergeant Steve Carbajal tells New Times the incident happened near the
intersection of Southern and Rural roads, on Saturday night.

According to police, Scott was riding east on his motorized bicycle when he was hit by a
vehicle making a left turn from Southern onto Rural Road.

After hitting the victim, the driver drove off. He has not been

The car, police say, has been preliminarily identified as a gold or beige 2002-2007 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable (similar to the one in the photo).

Police say the car may have a missing passenger-side mirror and should have damage to the
front passenger side. It also may have a broken front passenger side window.

If you've seen the car or know what happened, Tempe police want to talk to you, so give them a call at 480-350-8311 or phone Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Sorry James, but you are missing an important part of the law. Another section [28-812] stipulates that bicycles have the same responsibilities and privileges as motor vehicles. The death-rate when pedaling on the sidewalk and in crosswalks is about 5 times that of driving a bicycle in traffic. We can't tell if proper lights were used by the cyclist. Brighter clothing helps greatly.

This is why I am so involved in the following with the Coalition of AZ Bicyclists:

Have you wanted the health and environmental benefits of cycling, but were worried about safety? Have you been cycling for years, but think you could learn more? Our Traffic Skills 101 class gives you the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively bicycle in nearly all traffic situations. Instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists provide bicycle and helmet fit, bicycle laws, prediction and prevention of crashes and skills to protect yourself.

Classes are scheduled on Nov 6, Dec 11, Jan 15, Feb 12, Mar 19(Women only) and Apr 9 at AmeriSchools Academy, 1333 W Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85013 from 7AM until 5PM.
