Phil Mickelson Already Out Of Contention At British Open

Well, less than 24 hours later, we can throw all of that out the window.

After battling heavy wind and chilly temperatures for two days, the former ASU star is pretty much done at this tournament.

After shooting a 73 on Friday, Lefty bounced back and shot a 71 this morning to put him at even par so far.

It's not that Mickelson has played horribly. Some poor guy finished his second round at +21. We think he's probably still crying in the bathroom with embarrassment.

But Phil hasn't played great, or well enough to win, either. The leader is Louis Oosthuizen, who is sitting pretty at -12 heading into the weekend.

And no, we've never heard of the South African Oosthuizen (pronounced "West-hi-zen") either before this weekend at the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Hell, even John Daly (questionale wardrobe choices and all) has a better score after two rounds.

But back to Phil.

Even though he's double-digit shots behind the leader, it looks as if Lefty will still make the cut, which is projected at +1.

This weekend pretty much sums up the unpleasant relationship that Mickelson has with the Open Championship. Phil has just one top-10 finish at this tournament and certainly would need a miracle to get his second this weekend.

With Tiger Woods in the hunt and in contention for another major title, this weekend also will go down as another missed opportunity for Phil to pass the world's worst husband.

While Tiger hasn't played brilliantly or been overly flashy, he has been consistent despite of the stormy weather conditions. Consistency is something Phil has trouble stringing together these days.

Meantime, we'll continue to wait and see if Mickelson can ever pass Tiger at the top.
