Dan Haren
With the July 31st trade deadline looming on the horizon, many are wondering if the D-Backs will make any noise in the following days.

One name that keeps getting thrown around is starting pitcher Dan Haren, who is 7-8 with a 4.60 ERA and 133 strikeouts this year.

The team he's being linked to, not surprisingly, is the New York Yankees, who seem to be involved in discussions for just about every big-name player in the majors.

But this time the Yankees are actually going after a player they badly need, rather than one they just want to show off to fans.

Andy Pettitte injured his groin on Sunday and is headed for the disabled list.

A.J. Burnett is just plain crazy after he punched glass doors in the clubhouse after a dismal performance, resulting in cuts on his pitching hand.

In Haren, the Yanks would be getting a workhorse who is also known for his strikeouts. The clear ace of the D-Backs staff, Haren would provide New York with a solid number-two option behind CC Sabathia.

But the question becomes whether new Snakes General Manager Jerry Dipoto will pull the trigger on such a deal, which is probably still a long ways away from serious completion.

Haren is one of the top (if not the best) player on the team. Taking him out of the equation would drastically decrease the team's chances of winning. Although they can't seem to win whoever is on the field.

The other option is to throw in the towel on a miserable season. Picking up a slew of top prospects might bolster the team's chances of success in the future.

Whatever the Snakes do, they don't have a whole lot of time to debate. The trade deadline closes in a week-and-a-half, and the Yankees are surely going to be chatting with other teams.

This is an interesting first test for Dipoto. We'll see if he passes or fails.
