According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a reported assault near the 2000 block of South Puma Circle in Cottonwood around 7:45 Monday night.
When deputies got to the scene, a neighbor told the officers that the two men involved in the assault were upstairs in the home across the street.
Deputies entered the house and made their way to an upstairs bathroom where they found 57-year-old Gay Schlee laying in a bathtub, covered in blood.
Schlee told officers there was another man in the bathroom with him but didn't say where. Deputy's asked the other man to identify himself but got no response.
That's when deputies noticed that the other individual was in the bathtub underneath Schlee.
Deputies removed Schlee from the tub so they could check the condition of the man under him, and it turned out the man was dead.
The victim has been identified as 74-year-old Leon Haller, and police say he appears to have been assaulted with a blunt object.
Haller and Schlee were roommates at the home, but police haven't released a motive for the murder.
Schlee was booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder. He's being held on $1 million bail.
