Behind an early offensive surge and the solid, steady arm of Rodrigo Lopez, the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a convincing 10-4 win Monday night at Chase Field against the New York Yankees.

With numerous Yankee fans in attendance in the sellout crowd, the Snakes were the ones who looked like a first-place team.

Justin Upton led the way as he homered twice while driving in four and scoring four. It is his third career multi-home-run game.

The D-Backs touched up New York starter A.J. Burnett early and often as they staked out a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

After retiring the first two batters, Burnett ran into a load of trouble.

Upton smacked his 12th home run of the year to straight away center to make it 1-0.

After Miguel Montero and Chris Young singled, Adam LaRoche blasted long balls to right field to quickly make it 4-0.

Mark Reynolds got in on the action with a home run to make it 5-0 before most fans had settled into their seats.

Montero added to the damage in the second inning with an RBI double to score Upton.

Meanwhile, as the Snakes piled on the offense, Lopez pitched extremely effectively, keeping the powerful Yankee sluggers off balance all night.

In all, Lopez pitched eight innings while allowing three runs and eight hits. He only struck out two, but he didn't allow the Yankees to put together a scoring threat all game.

Leading 7-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Upton provided some insurance runs with a three-run blast. The long ball probably took the sting out of him getting plunked in the elbow earlier in the game.

Things were clicking on all cylinders for the D-Backs against the superior team. Timely, powerful hitting and consistent pitching usually equal a successful combination for a win.

The second game of the series is tomorrow as Dan Haren (7-5, 4.71 ERA) against Andy Pettitte (8-2, 2.47 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. TV: Fox Sports Arizona. Radio: KTAR 620-AM. More info: dbacks.com.
