Parents of ASU Student Killed in Robbery Attempt Pleads for Suspect to Turn Himself In

​The parents of Kyleigh Ann Sousa, the 21-year-old Arizona State University student who was killed in a robbery attempt on Wednesday, made a public plea to the suspect or suspects in the case to surrender to police.

At a press conference yesterday, Karen Montenegro, Sousa's mother, who flew in from New Jersey, tearfully asked the suspects to come forward.

"When I received the call from the doctors at the hospital, it [was an] every mother's nightmare telephone call," Montenegro said."Whoever did this, if you hear me, please just turn yourself in and do right by me and my family, and I will somehow, in my heart, try to forgive you."

About 2 a.m. Wednesday, Tempe police responded to a call that a female had been run over near the International House of Pancakes on Apache Boulevard in Tempe.

Police say the victim, 21-year-old Kyleigh Ann Sousa, was approached by a heavy-set Hispanic male in a newer model, silver Chrysler 300.

This is a car similar to the one driven by the man who tried to rob 21-year-old Kyleigh Sousa.

The suspect, police say, grabbed the girl's purse and tried to drive away.

Tempe police Sergeant Steve Carbajal tells New Times the suspect is still at large but police believe there may have been others in the car when the robbery occurred.

Carbajal wouldn't say whether the suspects' car was caught on any surveillance video in the area but says anyone who was in the car with the suspect will face serious charges, possibly murder.
