J.D. Hayworth Calls John McCain's World War II History Lesson "Shameful"

Last weekend, Senate hopeful J.D. Hayworth shocked us with his interesting take on United States involvement in World War II, which prompted a very-public history lesson from John McCain, his opponent in the GOP Senate primary.

Today, Hayworth is saying McCain's World War II tutorial is "shameful."

If you missed it, here's what Hayworth had to say to a group of Arizona Republicans over the weekend:

"But I would also point out, that if we want to be sticklers, the war that Dwight Eisenhower led in Europe against the Third Reich was never declared by the United States Congress," Hayworth bumbled. "Recall, the Congress passed a war resolution against Japan. Germany
declared war on us two days later. We never formally declared war on Hitler's Germany, and yet we fought the war."

As you may know, the U.S. did declare war on Germany, hence, the four years American soldiers spent chasing Nazis around Europe.

In McCain's latest Web ad, which you can see here, "The Maverick's" campaign uses Hayworth's gaffe to continue to harp on his former ranking as among the dumbest members of Congress in a survey by Radar Online.

Hayworth now says McCain's attack on his intelligence (or lack thereof) has no place in the campaign and is being used as a "political tool."

"It was a mistake that the McCain camp is trying to shamelessly use to distract voters from the real issues. They may believe it is clever and cute to show war footage including cannon firing and the Third Reich's war machine," says Hayworth campaign spokesman Mark Sanders. "But it's not, and it is politics at its worst, which is what we have come to expect from John McCain."

We're not sure what's so shameful about a history lesson for a guy who clearly needs one -- and what better teacher than John McCain? The guy was already 8 years old when the Allies stormed the beaches.
