A Peoria father who crashed into a bicyclist in 2008 has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and hit-and-run.

Aaron Chubick, 32, was released from jail on a $50,000 bond after his Thursday arraignment.

The victim, Richard Markarian, 65, was a retired lab tech for General Electric and an avid cyclist who had moved to Peoria from the Midwest in 1999.

Every morning at 3 a.m., except on the coldest days, Markarian would dress up in his cycling gear and hit the road for a 20- to 25-mile ride, says local attorney Jeff Finley.

Finley is helping sue Chubick on behalf of Markarian's wife, Linda.

About 3:30 a.m. on October 26, police say, Markarian had been riding his bike east in the 8800 block of West Beardsley Road, keeping well to the right.

Chubick, headed the same way in his 2003 pickup, "left the roadway" and smashed into Markarian from behind, according to a 2008 Peoria police news release about the collision.

Chubick's pickup skidded to the other side of the road. Then the married father of three drove home, driving his car up a curb on the way, according to police. He explained what had happened to his wife, who called the cops.

A Maricopa grand jury indicted Chubick last month.

Finley has been hired by Linda Nicol, Markarian's wife, to help sue Chubick. A civil case is pending in Maricopa County Superior Court.
