A new U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint opened near Tubac yesterday. The $1.5 million interim checkpoint along Interstate 19 is supposed to help catch illegal immigrants and drug runners, but residents in the Santa Cruz Valley say it will hurt businesses and endanger neighborhoods...A former Rhodes Junior High School student was arrested by Mesa police after threatening another student with two toy handguns outside the school Monday. The 14-year-old boy was arrested around 9:40 a.m. off school grounds, and could face charges related to threats and assault...In something like a scene from Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams, a Lake Havasu City woman has been arrested for allegedly selling marijuana from her ice cream truck. Lorna Gaudette, 51, was nabbed last Thursday after officers saw her sell some pot from the truck. When they searched the vehicle, they found more marijuana. Gaudette faces several drug charges and is being held in Mohave County...

Toy guns got one Mesa teen in serious trouble.

A Flagstaff police officer is dead from an apparent suicide. Police said the body of Officer Rick Kellogg was found inside his home early Sunday, and that he died from a single gunshot wound. Police say Kellogg, who worked for the department for six years, was off-duty at the time and that he was apparently alone when he decided to shoot himself...Dave Bryant, a veteran powerboat racer from Mesa, died in a race in Australia over the weekend. Bryant, 44, was killed when his open cockpit boat rolled over at an estimated 135 miles per hour. He had been racing nearly 15 years...The Arizona Department of Public Safety conducted a pair of traffic stops this morning that revealed several suspected illegal immigrants. A DPS spokesman says officers pulled over a pickup truck in Chandler at 6:15 a.m. and arrested the driver, but 12 people ran from the bed of the truck and are still on the loose. At a second stop in Chandler, officers arrested a driver and 10 suspected illegal immigrants.
