A Phoenix mom, who plead guilty to the second-degree murder of her 4-month-old son, was sentenced to decades in prison today in Maricopa County Superior Court.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced that 25-year-old Katherine Hatten got 37 years in prison for the murder of her infant.

In April of 2007, Phoenix police found the emaciated, dead body of Hatten's baby and found that his injuries were consistent with neglect, prompting police to take a look at Hatten and the baby's father, Thaddeus Bechtel.

When police found the body, it weighed only 4.5 pounds, and the official cause of death was listed as neglect.

Bechtel went to trial and was found guilty of two counts of child abuse. He is serving a 22-year prison sentence.

Hatten, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to second degree murder and to one count of child abuse and was sentenced this morning.

In the wake of the sentencing, County Attorney Andrew Thomas was quick to offer one of his standard, vague statements about justice and how crime never pays:

"Phoenix Police and our prosecutors worked to give this young victim a voice and bring justice to his memory. This infant's death was not accidental. It was murder."
