Grover Norquist, Americans for Tax Reform President, Endorses John McCain in Senate Primary; Takes Swipe at J.D. Hayworth, Too
|American for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist|
Grover Norquist says McCain is best suited to not raise taxes and that he "consistently votes against tax increases and for spending restraint.
"John McCain, along with most of the Republicans, has been very good on not raising taxes," Norquist tells KFYI's Mike Broomhead. "But he's also been a leader on the issue that has always been important but hasn't been focused on sufficiently until this year, and that's the spending issue."
In a primary race that resembles the one taking shape in Arizona, Norquist also endorsed Florida U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio, who is squaring off in a GOP primary with Florida Governor Charlie Crist. Crist is in a similar situation as McCain in that he is not exactly a darling of the conservative movement and is facing opposition from a more conservative candidate.
In the Florida race, Norquist and the ultra-right teabaggers both endorsed the more conservative candidate. Neither group has come out swingin' for Hayworth, though.
In fact, Norquist had some choice words for Hayworth:
"J.D. Hayworth, the challenger, needs to explain why he lost his House seat, okay? If you can't get yourself re-elected to your House seat, what do you bring to the table on a Senate race? When you throw away a race like that, it's very expensive to the rest of the Party."
