Arizona Gun Laws "Lack Common Sense," Report Claims; What About Bringing Your Gun to the Bar Doesn't Make Sense?

Categories: Wild, Wild West
Arizona has some of the weakest gun laws in the country, and one gun-violence-prevention group claims they flat out "lack common sense."

We could have told you that -- in Arizona, you can bring a gun to the bar with you for fuck's sake.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (named after James Brady, Ronald Reagan's press secretary, who was shot in an assassination attempt on Reagan) released it's gun-law scorecard for each state today, and Arizona scored worse than nearly every state in the country.

Out of 100 possible points, Arizona scored two.

The only state to score worse than Arizona was Utah, which earned no points.

Even Texas and Montana managed a higher score than Arizona, with Texas coming in with nine points and Montana earning four.

The points are based on sets of criteria that recognize laws states have on the books that help curb gun violence. Check out the full scorecard here.

Arizona earned its two points because there is no law on the books that requires universities to allow guns on campus.

If State Senator Jack Harper has his way and his bill forcing universities to allow professors to carry concealed weapons on college campuses is passed, Arizona could lose the only two points it's got.

The major concern of the Brady Campaign is how easy it is for people to buy and traffic guns in Arizona.
"Since Arizona does not require Brady criminal background checks on all firearm sales, including those at gun shows, gun traffickers don't need to leave the state to funnel illegal guns to felons and gang members," says Paul Helmke,Brady Campaign president. "Arizona officials have done nothing in the past year to stop the flow of illegal guns within the state, including closing the loophole that allows dangerous people to walk into gun shows and buy guns without background checks."

The group's final analysis of Arizona is that the state "lacks common sense gun laws."

What Arizona may lack in common sense gun laws, it makes up for in hillbilly, gun-toting legislators. Click here to have a look at some of their handiwork from this legislative session.

Okay for 1. 90% of sellers at gun shows requite a background check, they phone it in right then and there... This is NOT where illegal trafficking takes place. ALL gun stores ie. Wal-Mart, Lone Wolf, Cabela's, Shooters World etc, require a background check before purchasing a firearm. 2. You CAN bring a firearm into a bar as long as there are no signs stating firearms are not permitted, and you are not consuming alcohol. MOST bars in the Phoenix area do not allow firearms to be on your persons. The exception is if there is an emergency you CAN enter a bar with a firearm to use a phone to call 911 or need medical aid as long as you do no consume alcohol. I look at Arizona scoring "2" points as a great thing. We live in a free state where we can bear arms and are not regulated like most other states. The sense of individual security and being able to protect ones self or others in a deadly situation is a right EVERY American should be able to have. Unless of course you're a felon, druggie, or habitual law breaker.. Thank you for reading this, if you have other questions pertaining to Arizona gun laws, please e-mail me at

Disarming law abiding citizens does not help society. More laws means more loopholes for criminals to slip through, its not going to stop them. Thankyou Arizona for allowing me to exercise my Second Amendment, and protect my family. I could never have that luxury in a place like California, DC, New York, or Massachusetts.

well that's it I'm moving out of AZ I'm going to Utah. I have my CCW and a AR15 with a short barrel and silencer what better place to go for me. OR maybe ... I'll stay right hear and work harder to free up my rights and my options to defend my self hear in good ohl AZ. You can have CA and NY. A firearm is a tool it is no different than a knife, car, hammer or pen and the pen has killed more people than any of them.
