Maricopa County No. 2 in the Country When it Comes to Net Job Losses, According to Latest Statistics

​In the most recent blow to Maricopa County's reputation throughout the country, the latest jobs report is out, and it ain't pretty for the Valley.

Among the county's other embarrassing, um, problems -- law enforcement and prosecutorial, mainly -- Maricopa County is now the No. 2 county in the country for net job loss, according to the latest statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

From June 2008 to June 2009, Maricopa County said adios to 149,900 jobs, second only to Los Angeles County, which lost a whopping 256,000.

Other notable losers were Cook County, Illinois -- Chicago's turf -- which lost 137,000 jobs.

Rounding out the most jobless five counties were New York County, New York, and Orange County, California, each losing more than 110,000 jobs.

That these counties are in large metro areas had a lot to do with the high numers, no doubt. Though it's interesting that Maricopa County had more job loss than much-larger New York and Cook counties.

How they all all stack up per capita would be more telling.

We can only hope that the trend extends to November and wipes out some of the elected officials who helped get us into this mess. Oh, wait a minute, that was the last big election, right?
