​An ASU student lost a leg in the recent Haiti earthquake. Graduate student Christa Brelsford was volunteering to teach literacy in Haiti when the quake hit. She is currently recovering at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital and says she's thankful to be alive...Higley Unified School District Supervisor Denise Birdwell had her new contract approved by the governing board Thursday night. The contract will keep Birdwell in her position for another three years, and also calls for a $14,900 raise. Birdwell says she does not expect her salary to change or receive another raise during her contract, because of current budget limitations...A deejay for local country radio station KNIX was arrested on suspicion of DUI charges. George Campbell, half of the station's morning show Ben & Matt, was arrested in Scottsdale January 8. Police say he was driving 87 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone, and blew .144 on a preliminary breath test. He also submitted a blood test. Campbell was booked and later released...

​Phoenix police have arrested the mother who threw her newborn baby into a trash can. The woman, Brittney Williams, reportedly hid her pregnancy from her family and gave birth at home before throwing the baby away. She has been charged with homicide and child abuse...A person was flown to the hospital and another arrested after an early morning shootout in Mesa. The shooting occurred near Baseline and Sossaman Roads around 6:30 a.m., and the motive is unclear. The condition of the victim isn't known at this time...Phoenix-based group Chicanos Por La Causa announced it will distribute $137 million in federal funds to improve neighborhoods impacted by foreclosures. The funding will be used in eight states, including Arizona, and Washington.
