Maricopa County Animal Shelters Infested With Chihuahuas

Last week, Valley Fever posted a story about California animal shelters being overrun with chihuahuas and how shelter officials were pawning off the little pooches to shelters in Arizona.

Thanks for nothing, California, because now the chihuahua infestation seems to have found its way into Maricopa County.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Shelters are reporting an alarming increase in the number of chihuahuas brought to shelters here, and the bug-eyed canines are becoming too much to handle.

In the last two months, county animal shelters have taken in 821 chihuahuas, which is 230 more than shelters received during the same period last year.

Shelter officials aren't sure what's causing the influx of chihuahuas, but officials in California attribute the rise to celebutards like Paris Hilton, who popularized the use of the dogs as fashion accessories. After people adopted the dogs and realized taking care of them requires a little more responsibility than taking care of a purse, they would often give them up.

In response to the excess chihuahua problem, shelters are offering a discounted adoption fee to anyone interested in taking one of these things home.

Shelters currently have 84 chihuahuas ready for adoption, and you can pick one up for the this-weekend-only bargain price of $36.
