The University of Arizona plans to shut down its nuclear reactor by mid-2010. The license for the 51-year-old reactor, used for research, expires next year, and Director John Williams says it isn't used enough to warrant a vigorous re-licensing process with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission...The city of Mesa is trying to eliminate all the illegal signs on street corners, and has enlisted the help of a group of about 27 volunteers. The volunteers are residents who do monthly "sign sweeps," and they say they removed about 12,000 illegal signs last year...The Phoenix Suns defeated the Washington Wizards 121-95 on home court Saturday night. Amar'e Stoudemire scored 23 points and Jason Richardson scored 22 in the victory. The Suns now face the Cleveland Cavaliers on home court tonight... Local branches of the Salvation Army have been hiring homeless people to work as bell ringers. Tempe Salvation Army Captain Robyn Bridgeo says he hired homeless people because he wants to change the public's mindset...

Off the records: Music store Circles will close next year.
Glendale police are asking for the public's help in a shooting investigation. The shooting occurred near 73rd Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Glendale early Monday morning, when a 52-year-old woman was reportedly shot twice in the head. The woman, who may have been jogging when she was shot, was taken to the hospital, but had no identification. Police asks anyone with information to call the Glendale police...Federal customs officers in Naco, Arizona seized 145 pounds of marijuana they found hidden in the rocker panels of a vehicle. They became suspicious when the vehicle came through the port of entry, and used high-tech equipment to find the drugs, which have an estimated street value of $230,000...Music store Circles Discs and Tapes is going out of business after almost 40 years on Central Avenue. The owners cite poor sales and low foot traffic as the main reasons for closure. The store will remain open until sometime after January 1.
