​A new survey by a Washington-based publisher puts Gilbert and Surprise among the safest cities in the country. The cities were ranked 24th and 27th by CQ Publishers. The group calculated FBI crime rates for 2008 and found both cities to have some of the lowest in the country... There's an increase in the number of legal immigrants applying for U.S. citizenship in Arizona, mirroring a national trend. The number of applications has increased by 11 percent from 2008 but is still lower than it has been in several years...A woman was murdered in a K-Mart parking lot in Phoenix last night. Police say she was in her car when an unidentified man went up to the window and shot her. She died shortly after...A Bullhead City man was sentenced to five years in prison for mailing child pornography. ​was also sentenced to lifetime probation and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine...The Iraqi man who police say ran over his daughter with his car for being too "westernized," has pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated assault. Faleh Hassan Almaleki could face tougher charges, because his daughter, who was on life-support for more than a week, died...Road access to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is scheduled to close next week. The Department of Transportation will close State Route 67, the only road still open that provides access to the North Rim. The road is scheduled to open again in May.
