Joe Arpaio to Host Fundraiser to Help Pay J.D. Hayworth's Legal Bills

Former Congressman J.D. Hayworth
On December 5, for $250, you could have the (cough!) honor of posing for a photograph with Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former Congressman J.D. Hayworth. Or, you could go into your bathroom and flush $250 down the toilet -- whatever seems like a better value.

That's right, Joe is hosting a fundraiser for Hayworth's "The Freedom in Truth Trust." In other words, Arpaio is trying to help pay off Hayworth's lawyers.

The Freedom in Truth Trust is little more than a fund set up to pay Hayworth's legal bills incurred while defending his ties to disgraced politico Jack Abramoff.

Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud and influence-peddling charges and is now sitting in a federal prison in Maryland.

Hayworth was never charged or convicted of anything and maintains he did nothing wrong. However, in defending himself from any potential charges, Hayworth racked up some substantial legal bills and lost his seat in Congress to Harry Mitchell in 2006, partly because of the Abramoff connection.

The fundraiser is billed as "America's Toughest Sheriff's First Annual Holiday Party," and will be held at the Paradise Valley home of PR exec Jason Rose, natch.

For $250, you can get a photo with Arpaio and Hayworth. For $100, you can attend the general reception, where a press release boasts: "A major, surprise special guest is likely to be making an appearance."

Don't get your hopes up -- it's probably that twit Andy Thomas.

Sounds thrilling, right?
