"Spiritual Warrior" James Ray Gives Sweat Lodge Victim's Family $5K; Gee Thanks

Virginia Brown, the mother of Kirby Brown, told CNN's Larry King that she received a sympathy card from Ray about two weeks after her daughter tragically died in the sweat tent. Along with the card -- a check for $5,000.
"It's laughable," Virginia Brown said on Larry King Live Monday night. "My daughter paid twice that to go to his event."
Victims reportedly paid as much as $9,000 for the retreat, which was promised to be "one of the most intense experiences of their lives."
Well, that part's got to be true.
On the card, Ray wrote to the victim's mom: "Please accept this financial assistance." On the check he penned "In honor of Kirby Brown."

I certainly hope Mrs. Brown was wise enough to not cash or deposit the check...
Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 27 2009 @ 7:25PMdo not cash the check - it will be looked at as a settlement.
Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 27 2009 @ 8:09PMThe three deaths in Sedona were not the first for James Arthur Ray this year. In July, when Ray was holding another seminar in San Diego, a participant named Colleen Conaway jumped off the highest level of the Horton Plaza mall and died. This was during a "field trip" where participants' cell phones and IDs were confiscated. As of yet, despite certain blogs endeavoring to bring it to the attention of the press, nothing has been done to point out this tragedy ALSO linked to James Arthur Ray. Especially when you consider that had Conaway not jumped off the Horton Plaza Mall, she was prepaid to go to Spiritual Warrior.
Do you think her surviving kin received a refund for the fact that she was not able to go to Spiritual Warrior because she was dead? Why, apparently not.
More info here, including an interview with Conaway's sister Lynn: http://www.saltydroid.info/long-trips-to-the-mall/
And, to second, third and fourth the previous comments...DO NOT CASH THE CHECK!
Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009 @ 7:30AMThe story regarding Colleen's death which was already mentioned by the poster above who provided the link is indeed tragic. Its seems that Ray's events are death traps, using his powers manipulation and brainwashing. As seen in Colleen's case. This could be a cause for alarm.....
Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009 @ 10:42AMShadow Wolf, I think I am beginning to see the silver lining behind this dark cloud.
(1) This eventually will be the end of this plaything for profit James Arthur Ray has going on, and he may not be able to injure or kill anyone else with his fantasies and:
(2) This exposure of the abuses of the Native ceremony may result in legislation that will make such activities illegal in normal states. I'm not sure Arizona will participate, however, based on what I deem 'normal'.
You may want to have a congress person look at such legislation for the next session. I'm sure there are lobbyists for the Nation that can make the needed contact.

Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009 @ 4:44PMRay's comment to ABC News last year was quite telling: "I know people of the Jewish faith and heritage who don't necessarily believe the Holocaust was bad."
I don't even know how to respond to that....
Posted On: Thursday, Oct. 29 2009 @ 1:58PM After reading Harmonic Wealth in 2008, I attended a Harmonic Wealth Weekend seminar in Las Vegas, NV.
I loved the book but at the seminar, Mr. Ray's stick is to play upon the irrational need that many people have to belong, their fear of failure, and the need to show that you can 'measure up'. He is a master of it. His rhetoric blames each of us for anything bad in our lives, as attracted by us, to us. In tent revival fashion he runs sessions for long uninterrupted periods of time with no breaks, little water, and little food, long into the night with the express purpose of getting attendees to signup for more expensive seminars later on. Sufficiently worn down mentally and physically, many spend thousands of dollars to attend future seminars that will "bring" them wealth and a new, better, life.
The basic message, 'self reliance'and a 'balanced life' is a good one but in order to spend 30K, the cost of his total package of workshops one has to be brainwashed, otherwise no one would pay to submit to such harsh treatment. Mr. Ray verbally abuses, publicly, anyone who dares disagree with anything he might say or do at a seminar. For example, and this is in way a comparison to what happened in AZ, at Harmonic Wealth Weekend, he asks all participants to take all the money out of their purses or pockets and hold it in their right hand, making a fist around the money, then everyone walks around the room, handing the money in their hands to someone else while receiving money from the next person. When Mr. Ray says stop you get to keep the money that you have in your hand. Of course some people lose hundreds of dollars during this "game" which makes them not at all happy. One of the fellows at my seminar complained that he had lost his cab fare home. Big mistake, huge...because complaining during the "What you learned" portion of the excercise is not tolerated. Complain and receive verbal abuse by Mr. Ray for "worrying" about money and focusing on what you don't have, called out in front of 1000 participants for being somehow less, people end up intimidated and in tears over this silly excercise. It is not hard for me to imagine how intimidated participants became when they tried to leave the sweatlodge.
Sad, tragic, but bound to happen is all I can say about the AZ sweatlodge loss of life, anyone could tell it was all about control and the money for Mr. Ray.
Wow, thanks for your honesty, this man is evil
Posted On: Sunday, Nov. 1 2009 @ 11:11AMYes, thanks, Kelly. If you have other specific experiences you remember, we'd love to hear them.
Posted On: Sunday, Nov. 1 2009 @ 10:52PM"What would you do to get money if you had a flat tire or your furnace went out?" That was Mr. Ray's response to someone inquiring about signing up for a seminar that said they didn't have the money.
Really, Mr. Ray? Your services are comparable to an "emergency fund"? So sad that for some they now are.
His free seminar had some good information in it and was very energetic for 1 hour and 50 minutes. Then in the last 10 minutes this fellow turned into the slickest, slimiest snake oil salespeople I had ever witnessed. He was rude, boarish and challenged everyone who asked why. His remedy for everything was "go to the back of the room and sign up for my seminar".
I was glad to see that he announced that he is taking the rest of 2009 off to "cooperate" with officials.
Thanks all for sharing your views.

Posted On: Monday, Nov. 2 2009 @ 4:35AMI was also at the Las Vegas HWW event that Kelly mentions. However, I have to disagree with her observations.
First, 1000 people were NOT in attendance. It was more like 400 - 500 at the most.
Second, the gentleman who lost his "cab fare" money received more than that back from the participants after his "hot seat" activity with James. I believe the gentleman learned alot about himself that day - and for the better. Certainly, the audience learned as well. Looks like Kelly didn't, though, and choose not to get the exercise. Too bad.
As for water and food, there was water in the room available for anyone who wanted it at any time. And we did break for lunch and dinner. I didn't go hungry. And no one stopped me from bringing into the room food and drink. Yes the days were long, but we knew that going into the seminar. It could have been 3 shorter days - but, hey, who wants to pay for another night's hotel?
As for being intimidated, pressured or brainwashed into future programs, well, I consider myself a sound-minded person and didn't feel it any different than a waitress asking me if I wanted dessert after my meal or a car sales person asking if I wanted floor mats for my new car: it's part of marketing which is everywhere around us, like it or not. We make choices everyday to consume or not to consume. Actually, I thought the marketing was low key - I've experienced worse.
So before people start jumping on the bandwagon ready to tar and feather, I suggest being open-minded and hearing more than one opinion/version. (And no, I'm not a JRI employee. Just a regular person who is offended by hearing false accusations.) I can only speak to the HWW event as that is all I experienced.
