As much as we hate to quote Keanu Reeves, in the 1989 film "Parenthood," his halfwit character "Tod" makes a coarse but eloquent point about paternity.

When describing his father to his future mother-in-law, "Tod" tells her, "You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car -- hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father."

This brings us to our featured topic.

The 3-week-old girl, who police say was dropped and poked in the eye by her ex-con, drug-addict father, died Monday as a result of her injuries.

Authorities are now recommending a homicide charge for Brian Mark Hopf, who now claims he accidentally poked her in the eye while feeding her and then accidentally dropped her, leaving her with three skull fractures.

Police, however, say the injuries indicate there were multiple blows to the head. The girl also had injuries to her thighs and genitals, and police are looking into possible sexual assault.

Hopf, an admitted meth user, had police called on him in January over a domestic dispute between him and the girl's mother. He was convicted of credit card theft back in 2007.

Quite the role model, apparently?
