It's Raining Cats -- and Animal Shelters Need You to Adopt One or Two

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control wants you to a adopt a "desperate housecat." Or maybe even two.

Last year, the number of stray cats taken in by the county tripled once summer began. They literally took in thousands of cats for which they didn't have room -- and you know what happens to the old and ugly ones.

Officials want to avoid the same scenario this year with an aggressive adoption push. If you've been thinking of bringing a fuzzy, warm ball of fur into the house, you'll save money:

We have lowered the cost of cat adoptions for the month of June at both of our Animal Care Centers (2500 S. 27th Avenue in Phoenix and 2630 W. 8th Street in Mesa). Cats over 6 months are only $34, the cost of a rabies vaccination. Kittens are $50. Take home two felines, and the second one is half-off! The fee includes a spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, carrying case, and adoption kit.

They're also great at killing roof rats.

The best part about adopting from the county: You don't have to agree to keep the cat indoors, like some pet-adoption places require.
